Man jailed for four years on gun charge

A Kemp Road man was sentenced to four years in prison yesterday after police found a multi-caliber rifle and 50 rounds of ammunition of assorted caliber at his home.

Police arrested Garth Armbrister, 23, his mother, his two brothers, and their girlfriends after the raid on the home at Williams Lane on January 2.

The officers seized the rifle, a black magazine containing 18 .223 rounds of ammunition, 12 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition, a magazine with 23 rounds of 7.62 ammunition and a 9mm magazine.

Armbrister pleaded guilty to charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of a component part of a firearm and possession of ammunition at his arraignment before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt.

Armbrister has no prior convictions and was gainfully employed at a window repair company at the time of his arrest.

Lawyer Alex Morley said that Armbrister was remorseful, especially since his detention resulted in the arrest of his mother.

Morley said, “To bring shame to one’s mother, no son wants to do that.”

Ferguson-Pratt said that she had seen defendants “stand bold-faced next to their mother and say not guilty”.

Ferguson-Pratt said, “It seems that all is not lost with you. Your mother has taught you to take responsibility for your actions.”

However, Ferguson-Pratt said that Armbrister had no reasonable excuse to have a “mini-arsenal” in his mother’s home.

The prosecution withdrew the charges against Armbrister’s co-accused as a result of his guilty plea.
