Nine months after iconic waterfront restaurant Luciano’s of Chicago closed its doors for good, the property that once served top-notch Italian cuisine remains without a new tenant, likely a result of the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, the property’s owner Brent Symonette told Guardian Businesses yesterday.
Symonette told this paper in May that inquiries began to come in from potential tenants, even as Luciano’s continued its process of moving out.
He said yesterday that he continues to field inquiries, though none have led to the rental of the historic property.
‘I’ve entertained several inquiries but I haven’t rented it yet,” Symonette said.
He contended that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic will have to subside even more in order for the property to see a new, viable tenant.
“To a certain extent a lot of things are being held up by COVID-19 and I think we have to wait until we come out of this issue to see what’s going to happen,” said Symonette.
He added that he has no preference for the type of business that will rent the former restaurant.
Luciano’s shutdown amidst the COVID-19 pandemic led to the layoff of 72 people.
Luciano’s was in operation for almost 16 years. The company revealed in a statement last year that it had been struggling to make ends meet before COVID-19 pushed the company to the end of its reserves.
“Despite increased competition in the industry and a shift in the customer base, Luciano’s management had remained committed to its staff despite mounting losses each month,” Luciano’s stated in May.
“The economic impact of COVID-19 was the final nail in the coffin, leaving no choice but to close and make the team redundant.”
Luciano’s owners and management said they had “exhausted every avenue to keep the restaurant open and to keep the team employed”.
