An impressive jump for Minnesota State University at Moorhead (MSUM) Dragons’ sophomore Shyrone ‘Shy’ Kemp at the Marauders Track and Field Invite in Bismarck, Minnesota, tied a school record as the Bahamian collegiate athlete leapt 15.17 meters (m) – 49’ 9-1/4” in the men’s triple jump on Saturday to win that event. Kemp tied his own school record that he attained last season.
Also, Kemp’s leap was the third best in the nation at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II (DII) level, surpassing the NCAA DII provisional qualifying standard.
Finishing behind the junior was the University of Mary Marauders’ Astley Davis with a leap of 14.19m (46’ 6-3/4”). Finishing third was Dickinson State Blue Hawks’ Caleb Petross when he jumped 13.71m (44’ 11-3/4”).
Kemp performed well in the long jump as well as he finished second with a leap of 6.86m (22’ 6-1/4”). Petross won with a distance of 6.90m (22’ 7-3/4”). Finishing third was the Marauders’ Kyle Cacho as he recorded a jump of 6.61m (21’ 8-1/4”).
Kemp is coached by Bahamian Olympian Trevor Barry at MSUM.
There was a double victory for Dragons’ freshman Robynn Rolle-Curry in the women’s 200 and 400m races. She ran a time of 26.14 seconds to cross the finish line first overall in the 200m. Her teammate Anna Steadland was second with a time of 26.25 seconds. The Marauders’ Alli McCoy was close behind as she recorded a time of 26.70 seconds.
In the 400m, Rolle-Curry’s time of 1:00.20 was enough to give her the victory. McCoy was second when she finished the race in 1:00.69. McCoy’s teammate, Morgan Herts, clocked 1:02.03 to cross the finish line in third place.
Dragons’ sophomore Kendrick Major stopped a Marauders 1-2 punch when he clocked 52.11 seconds to finish second in the men’s 400m. Winning the race was the Marauders’ Tommy Rumpza in 52.01 seconds. Rumpza’s teammate, Brady Erickson, was third with a time of 52.71 seconds.
Major was fourth in the 200m with a time of 22.96 seconds. The Blue Hawks’ Martin Farver won that race when he recorded 22.60 seconds.
Shaquiel Higgs, another Bahamian who runs for the Dragons, was eighth overall in the 60m dash. He clocked 7.29 seconds. The Blue Hawks’ Keith Vanderlaan won that event with a time of 7.01 seconds. Higgs finished seventh in the 200m dash with a time of 23.50 seconds.
Ohio State University Buckeyes’ Devine Parker was on the track at the Horace Ashenfelter Indoor Track at the Penn State Invite in University Park, Pennsylvania, on Saturday. The sprinter picked up second and third place finishes at that meet in the women’s 200 and 60m races respectively.
Parker was brilliant in the 200m as she reached the finish line in 24.41 seconds to finish second. Her teammate Anavia Battle won that race as she clocked 23.42 seconds. The University of Maryland Terrapins’ Jada Smith finished third as she posted a time of 25 seconds flat.
In the 60m, Parker sprinted her way to the finish line in 7.62 seconds for third place. Winning that race was Battle in 7.46 seconds. The University of Maryland’s Bria Mack clocked 7.62 seconds to finish in second place.
Also at this meet among Bahamian collegians was the Buckeyes’ Adrian Curry who ran in the men’s 60 and 200m races. In the 60m dash, he had to settle for seventh after clocking 7.26 seconds. He was unable to go faster than his preliminaries time of 7.06 seconds. Winning that race was his teammate Praise Olatoke as he recorded a time of 6.86 seconds.
In the 200m, the sophomore finished 10th overall with a time of 22.49 seconds. Another one of his teammates, Eric Harrison, won that race as he clocked 21.24 seconds.
Running at the Woo Pig Classic at the Arkansas-Randall Tyson Track in Fayetteville, Arkansas was University of Kentucky Wildcats’ sophomore Megan Moss. She ran in the women’s 400m and 4x400m races.
In the 400m, Moss
finished eighth overall, recording a time of 53.52 seconds. Winning that race was the University of Southern California Trojans’ Bailey Lear. She clocked 52.55 seconds.
The Wildcats’ 4x400m relay team was third overall when they clocked 3:33.48. The team of Moss, Abby Steiner, Masai Russell and Dajour Miles were out-performed by the University of Arkansas Razorbacks and the Trojans. The Razorbacks was the winner with a time of 3:22.18 and the Trojans clocked 3:33.44 to place second.
Moss and the Wildcats will have this coming weekend off as they continue to prepare for the South Carolina Invitational in Columbia, South Carolina, set for February 5-6.
Over in Mankato, Minnesota, Minnesota State University at Mankato Mavericks’ sophomore Denisha Cartwright and freshman Lyric Brennen were in action at the Chuck Peterson Dual at Myers Fieldhouse. Cartwright ran the 60m hurdles and the 60m dash. Brennen only ran the 60m hurdles.
Cartwright finished second in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.84 seconds. Her teammate Keune MacKenzie ran 8.76 seconds to win that event. Concordia St. Paul University Golden Bears’ Christabelle Mulcahy was third when she reached the finish line in 9.19 seconds. Brennen was fifth in this race in 9.36 seconds.
In the 60m finals, Cartwright’s 7.79 seconds was enough to place her in third position. Her teammate, Makayla Jackson, finished the race in 7.70 seconds to win that event. The Golden Bears’ Toni Canfall edged out Cartwright to finish second in 7.72 seconds.
