The virtuous woman

“She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings, she plants a vineyard.

She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.

She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.” – Proverbs 31:16-18

Whereas, the recent happenings at the Capitol Building of the United States of America (USA) gave way to many digging into the historic archives of time to draw parallels. Fourteen days hence, January 20, 2021, established the only date since 1776 that a woman was duly sworn in as the vice president of the great United States of America! Now thank we all our God with heart and hands and voices, who wondrous things has done, in whom his world rejoices.

But, are we as women not only glad but very proud that in 2002, Cynthia “Mother” Pratt became deputy prime minister of our land, and 2005 when then-Prime Minister Perry Christie took ill, she acted as Prime Minister of our great Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

Over the past centuries, many have been the great accomplishments of women even to becoming heads of government of their country, among whom are India, Great Britain, Dominica, Germany, Liberia, Trinidad, Jamaica, New Zealand, Barbados and countless others; but in this accomplishment of Kamala Harris becoming the first woman to become vice president of the United States of America, has set global clarion bells of joy and pride.

Mind you, for many years, when I would interact with congressional wives and other powerful women of influence of America, I would jokingly say to them that in their country, as is said elsewhere, that a woman’s place is in the house, but since 1776, the women of your country have been kept in the “yard”. Thank God that the powerful wheel of time that turned in the direction for women of other lands, has propitiously arrived at the USA.

In our text today, this well-beloved scripture and words of wisdom is really only sung on women’s day in churches and maybe calls to the attention of women for the time being. But today, I give God thanks for such a powerful statement followed by a series of powerful answers of the finding of a virtuous woman.

For the sake of personal introspection, internalization and adulation, read Proverbs 31 and exhale – all the low self-esteem that has hindered your upward mobility; jealousy that has driven away your gift of being zealous for that which is good and the betterment of humanity; erased your power to arouse the social and spiritual consciousness of the oppressed, downtrodden and marginalized – and inhale the wonderful and marvelous blessings that God is bestowing on you right at this present moment to serve the present and your calling to fulfill. Indeed, the virtuous woman of our times has become the virtual woman.
