BISX All-Share Index down 139.14 points in 2020

The Bahamas International Securities Exchange (BISX) All-Share Index dropped 139.14 points in 2020 to settle at 2092.46 as at December 31.

This represents a 6.23 percent decrease year to date and is reflective of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on local markets.

This is compared to the 5.79 percent growth the exchange saw during 2019.

In comparison to US stock markets, all three major indexes closed 2020 with record gains: the Dow Jones climbed 7.3 percent, S&P rose 16.3 percent and Nasdaq saw a 43.6 gain. On the other hand, the London Stock Exchange’s Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 Index (FTSE 100) closed down 15.04 percent.

Market capitalization was also the lowest it has been in three years, ending 2020 at $4.761 billion; compared to $5.02 billion in 2019 and $4.81 billion recording in 2018.

“As at December 31, 2020 the market was comprised of 20 ordinary shares with a market capitalization of $4.51 billion. In addition, there were seven preference shares with a market capitalization of $244 million, 10 BGS (Bahamas government stock) and corporate bonds with a face value of $479 million, and 210 BRS (Bahamas registered stock) with a face value of $3.5 billion,” BISX noted in a press statement.

The top five share value leaders last year were FOCOL Holdings (FCL), leading the pack with $6 million; Commonwealth Brewery (CBL) with $3.34 million, Bahamas First Holdings (BFH) with $2.02 million, Bahamas Government Stock (BG0407) with $1.9 million and Cable Bahamas Series 6 (CAB6) at $1.7 million.

Based on trade volume, the top five leaders were FOCOL Holdings (FCL), Bahamas First Holdings (BFH), Commonwealth Brewery (CBL), FOCOL Holdings Class B (FCLB) and Cable Bahamas (CAB).

“Trading volume for the twelve-month period January 2, 2020 to December 31, 2020 was 5,558,484 shares for a value of $27,885,664.36. Trading volume for the twelve-month period January 2, 2019 to December 31, 2019 was 8,853,345 shares for a value of $42,745,590.47,” BISX stated.

“Trading volume for the three-month period October 1 to December 31, 2020 was 1,850,180 shares for a value of $10,688,918. By comparison, for the three-month period from October 1 to December 31, 2019 trading volume was 2,919,089 shares for a value of $13,818,345.31.”

The BISX All-Share Index is a market capitalization weighted index comprised of all primary market listings excluding debt securities.
