Dear Editor,
I recently read an article in a local daily that is troubling. The contents of the article were attributed to the president of The Bahamian Contractors Association’s (BCA) Michael Pratt, commenting on the “rotation” of the Mexican construction workers at Abaco’s Baker’s Bay project.
While I do have some concerns with his explanation my concern is more nationwide.
From all accounts, mostly because of the current pandemic, we are experiencing the highest unemployment rate ever. Yet, firstly, the country recently employed an Iraqi educator, has recently retained several high priced British barristers and now Mexican construction workers.
All my life, I believed that we had adequate educators, barristers and construction workers, while of course recognizing the rare need for qualified specialists.
My concern is that while our workers are being overlooked, I am confident that Iraq, Great Britain and Mexico are not ignoring their citizens and are out searching for Bahamian labor. Just my view.
