BTC claims North Eleuthera service blackouts due to equipment sabotage

Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) alleged on Friday that service blackouts in North Eleuthera were due to equipment sabotage on property where the company is experiencing “challenges” over use of the land.

BTC’s Head of Operations Andre Foster said in a press statement that while the company has many contractual arrangements with property owners on every island, recently it has experienced land use challenges on a property north of the Glass Window Bridge.

“BTC has scores of contractual arrangements with property owners in every single island across the country,” Foster said.

“For decades, BTC’s telecommunications equipment was secured on property north of the Glass Window Bridge. In recent years, we have had challenges with the use of the property and we’ve engaged in a process to bring swift resolution to the matter.

“BTC maintains its right to repair damaged equipment and will not tolerate any acts of sabotage.”

The company did not reveal what occurred to its equipment, but said on Friday that North Eleuthera mobile and fixed-line customers were on day two of service outages.

The statement said the outages affected customers in Lower Bogue, Harbour Island, Russell Island, Bluff Settlement and the North Eleuthera Airport.

Foster said the outages were beyond BTC’s control, but the company was restoring the downed services as quickly as possible.

“Additionally, our local technical teams are on standby to quickly restore services to North Eleutherans,” said Foster.

“BTC continues to work with all stakeholders, cognizant of the inconvenience being experienced by our customers. We are working diligently to restore services as soon as possible.”
