A man accused of causing a car crash that killed a married couple on Christmas Day was on Thursday remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services pending a bail hearing.
Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt scheduled a bail hearing for 33-year-old Alexander Butler to January 28 at the request of the prosecutor, Sergeant 3605 Samantha Miah.
Prosecutors say that Butler was driving a Honda Accord along West Bay Street around 6:10 p.m. when he collided with the Nissan March Brent Johnson and his wife Eulona Dean-Johnson were traveling in.
The couple died on the scene and their two daughters were taken to hospital with injuries.
Butler, a butcher, admitted that the vehicle did not have third-party insurance coverage; however, he denied causing the fatal accident through dangerous driving.
Miah asked the magistrate to defer bail arguments as she didn’t have time to review the file because she received it shortly before she came to court.
Miah said it was a serious matter as two people were dead.
Butler’s lawyer Domek Rolle submitted that he had a constitutional right to bail.
However, Ferguson-Pratt said that she would not force the prosecutor to make bail arguments before she was ready.
