While crime across The Bahamas decreased by 16 percent in 2020, sexual offenses increased by 34 percent, Police Commissioner Paul Rolle announced today.
Police investigated 159 reported sexual offenses between January 1 and December 31 2019, compared to 213 in 2020.
The cases include rape, unlawful sexual intercourse and attempted rape.
“Investigators noted a recent trend in sexual offense cases occurring at Airbnb rentals where parties are being posted,” the commissioner said during the 2021 Meet the Press at Police Headquarters.
“Additionally, young females are being targeted via social media.”
As it relates to murders, there were 95 in 2019, compared to 73 in 2020. Rolle said this is the fewest number of people killed in The Bahamas in the last 15 years.
He said the number of murders gradually declined since The Bahamas recorded a record 149 murders in 2015.
Armed robberies decreased by 41 percent. There were 531 reported incidents in 2019, compared to 313 in 2020.
Overall, Rolle said crimes against the person decreased by 21 percent. There were 896 incidents in 2019, compared to 712 in 2020.
Crimes against the property decreased by 15 percent. There were 4,128 reported incidents in 2019, compared to 3,519 in 2020.
Rolle said stolen vehicles decreased by 19 percent. Stealing from vehicles decreased by 32 percent. House break-ins decreased by 13 percent.
