MP alleges assault

Member of Parliament for South and Central Eleuthera Hank Johnson has filed a complaint to police alleging that he was assaulted by a male relative of his wife while he visited a female friend in Coral Harbour recently, Commissioner of Police Paul Rolle confirmed yesterday.

Rolle also confirmed that Johnson’s wife filed a counter complaint of assault against the MP.

The male relative has been charged by police with causing harm and is on police bail, according to the commissioner.

Rolle said the complaint Johnson’s wife made against him is under investigation.

The MP reportedly had visible injuries after the reported incident with the male relative.

The Nassau Guardian understands that Johnson presented a medical report following the alleged assault.

The suspect in the matter has denied the claims made against him, the commissioner also confirmed.

Rolle said he wished to be careful with details surrounding the alleged incident as police are still trying to determine the facts, but he said the male relative is expected to be charged in court.

When contacted by The Nassau Guardian last night, Johnson, chairman of the Road Traffic Authority, said he had no comment on the matter.

Johnson is a first term member of Parliament, who won the seat on the Free National Movement’s ticket with 50 percent of the vote.
