Collie says Bahamian embassy staff in Washington, D.C. safe

Bahamas Ambassador to the United States Sidney Collie said the embassy has issued a warning for Bahamians in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC “to stay away” from downtown DC after supporters of US President Donald Trump breached the Capitol building earlier today.

The breach occurred as Congress held a joint session to count the Electoral College votes that would clear the path to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration in two weeks.

Collie told The Nassau Guardian, “In my lifetime, I’ve never seen anything like this. I’ve seen demonstrations — political demonstrations, social demonstrations and demonstrations against law enforcement.

“But I’ve never seen the Capitol building in downtown DC breached so it’s something that I’m watching.

“I’m really surprised.”

He said all members of the embassy’s staff are safe, noting that “we’re at home”.

Thousands of Trump supporters continue to surround the Capitol.
