There was a clash between Bahamian big men Kadeem Coleby and Mark St. Fort over the weekend as their respective teams faced each other at the FPCO Arena in Fukuyama, Japan. At the end of competition, it was Coleby and the visitors, the Northern Happinets, who came away with victories in both of their games on Saturday and Sunday against St. Fort and the Hiroshima Dragonflies in Japan’s B1 League.
The Happinets now sport an 18-9 win-loss record on the season to sit in fifth position in the Eastern Division of the standings. The Dragonflies dropped to 10th place in the Western Division with a 4-23 record.
On Sunday Coleby finished with 13 points to help his team to a 97-57 blowout victory. St. Fort finished with three points in the loss. The home team went up 15-8 with 3:20 remaining in the first quarter. Coleby and the Happinets went on a 9-3 scoring run to close out the quarter and the Dragonflies led 18-17 heading into the second quarter.
A dominant 22-7 second quarter by the Happinets put them in the driver’s seat in this game. Coleby had three points in that quarter. The score was 39-25 in favor of the visiting team at the half. The third quarter was more of the same for the Happinets as they had a 34-12 advantage to go into the final quarter up 73-37. Coleby had five points and six rebounds in that quarter to go along with one block.
St. Fort scored two points in the fourth quarter but he and his team fell short as it was the Happinets who ran away with the victory.
In the game on Saturday, the Dragonflies played a tougher game but still fell short, losing 72-20. Coleby finished this game with nine points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field to finish the afternoon at a 57.1 percent clip. Defensively, he had one steal and one block in 25 minutes of play. St. Fort ended up scoreless and had one rebound in four minutes of play.
In the first quarter, the Dragonflies forged ahead, taking a 19-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. It was an even second quarter as both teams scored 18 points. The Dragonflies went into the half up 37-32.
A five-point third quarter advantage helped the Happinets to claw their way back into the game as the game was tied at 54 heading into the fourth.
With the game tied at 69 with 1:21 remaining, Coleby grabbed an offensive rebound and passed the ball to his teammate Takatoshi Furukawa who scored in the paint to give his team the lead. That put the Happinets up 71-69, and they held on for the victory.
Coleby and the Happinets will return to their home court this coming Saturday and Sunday when they play the Kawasaki Brave Thunders (16-9) at the CAN Arena, in Akita, Japan. Tip-off for the games is at 2:05 p.m. Japan time on both days, 14 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST) here in The Bahamas.
