The Bahamas falls to the Dominican Republic

After winning their first three ties to start the tournament, The Bahamas was defeated by the Dominican Republic Team 2 to suffer their first loss at the 2021 Confederation of Tennis of Central American and the Caribbean (COTECC) Under-12 (U12) team competition for

sub-region three and four. The match was held at court number four at the Centro Nacional de Tenis Parque del Este in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The Bahamas was swept in this tie 3-0 as the host nation was too much for the Bahamian squad on Thursday.

Kaylah Fox took the number one spot in the singles competition for a second straight day. She battled her way against Julienny de Cruz in the first set and managed to tie the set 5-5, before De Cruz managed to come away with a 7-5 victory. In the second set, Fox had a tougher time as De Cruz took her down 6-1.

In earlier play, in the number two spot, Briana Houlgrave was in action against Daniela McCario. The Bahamian gave it her all, but McCario came out on top in straight sets. Houlgrave fell 2-6 and 2-6.

In the doubles competition, Houlgrave teamed up with Tatyana Madu and the duo looked to come out on top against McCario and Valeria Santana. Unfortunately, the Bahamians fell 1-6 and 1-6.

Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) President Perry Newton was encouraged with the way the girls played.

“Despite not getting a win today we are very encouraged by the effort and heart on display at this tournament. We learn from every match and it makes our athletes better. Tatyana, Briana and Kaylah are a very talented trio. We are optimistic about tomorrow (today) and believe the team will finish strong. Coach (Marion) Bain has kept the girls focused and we are grateful for her leadership during these unusual times,” Newton said.

The Bahamas got off to a hot start in the tournament with wins against St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago and the Dominican Republic Team 1. They now sport a 3-1 win/loss record. The loss yesterday was a bump in the road for the team, and they will look to get back on the court today, hoping to end the tournament on a winning note. They play the US Virgin Islands today. A win will give The Bahamas a spot in the International Tennis Federation’s (ITF) COTECC U12 Team Finals in Mexico the week of November 22-26.
