Bastian, Carey compete for their respective schools

Bahamian collegiate swimmers Izaak Bastian and DaVante Carey were in the pool once again for their respective schools over the weekend and performed well.

Swimming in his first dual meet of the season was Olympian Izaak Bastian for the Florida State University (FSU) Seminoles. Going up against the Auburn University Tigers, they won 153-147 on Friday night.

The senior swam in two individual races and a relay race. He placed second in both of his individual races, and he looks for more promising results this school year.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Bastian clocked 53.47 seconds with splits of 25.16 and 28.31 seconds. Winning that race was the Tigers’ Reid Mikuta who clocked 53.28 seconds. Filling up the final podium spot was the Tigers’ Alejandro Flores in 54.92 seconds.

Bastian was unable to touch the wall before Mikuta in the 200-yard breast when he clocked 1:58.21 to finish second again. His fastest split was at the 25-yard mark when he clocked 26.92 seconds.

Mikuta won with a time of 1:58.14. His teammate Adriel Sanes swam 1:59.70 to finish third.

In the 200-yard medley relay, Bastian helped his team pick up a win. They swam 1:25.88. Auburn “A” and “B” teams were second and third respectively. The “A” team swam 1:27.33 and the “B” team swam 1:29.61.

Bastian and the Seminoles return to the pool on Saturday, taking on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Atlanta, Georgia, starting at 11 a.m.

Carey and the McKendree University Bearcats competed in a double dual against the Lindenwood University Lions and the Drury University Panthers. They won 194-101 against the Panthers and 178-120 over the Lions.

Carey was in action in the 400-yard medley relay. He along with Filipe Pinheiro, Gregg Lichinsky and Xander Skinner touched the wall in 3:18.45 for a win in that race. Carey had the fastest split on his leg when he swam 50.05 seconds on the lead backstroke leg.

The Panthers and Lions were tied with an identical time of 3:21.94.

Individually, the junior won the men’s 100-yard backstroke when he swam 49.59 seconds. His splits were 24.32 and 25.27 seconds. He held off the Panthers’ duo of Kham Glass and Felipe Zapata who finished second and third, respectively. Glass swam 49.83 seconds and his teammate recorded a time of 50.38 seconds.

The Bearcats return to the pool the coming weekend when they host St. Louis University and Truman State on Friday at 1 p.m. at the Metro Rec Plex in O’Fallon, Illinois. They host another double meet on Saturday against Delta State University and Missouri S&T.
