God is never too busy to create spiritual and moral newness in our lives

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. – Psalm 51:10

At the recent opening of the Parliament by Governor General of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas Sir Cornelius A. Smith there was an air and show of sophistication in fashion, style, and design by those attending. Because of the forecast of rainy weather coupled with the demolition of the Churchill Building, the Baha Mar Convention Center was chosen for the proceedings.

With the COVID-19 regulations and protocols put in place to try to control the spread of the virus, the entire way of life changed not only for us as a people, but the global village as well. Schools were closed, worship experiences were almost denied, members were part of the church of television, the celebration of marriages lost its bliss, funeral services were moved to graveyards, curfew was the ruler of limited social activities and the list goes on and on.

So, with the political victory of the Progressive Liberal Party, the stage was set for the “social” event of the year. The fashions on display rivaled those on the red carpet at the Oscars! Bahamians are really a talented people filled with creativity. I have always told many persons that Hollywood needs a script to cut a movie, but Bahamians need no script and can cut a movie on the spot.

In our lesson text taken from this very powerful Psalm of David, he is haunted by his guilt and acknowledges his personal responsibility for the death of Uriah, the Hittite. He confessed that it was his iniquity, his sin, and his transgression, and the blame was not to be put on anyone else. Not only had he sinned against God, but Bathsheba, the nation, Uriah and also himself. He had violated God’s moral law – thou shalt not kill.

Many times, we blame others for the wrong we knowingly do, rather than confess our sins and ask for forgiveness which is given if earnestly asked for. So, David asks God to “create in me a clean heart and renew the right the right spirit within me.”

Oh, how much we need to cry out to God today for the creation of clean hearts and renewing of the spirit of God in our lives. I always think about the men and boys in the Junkanoo shacks (except for 2020) – how they begin their creation of designs for the two Junkanoo parades at Boxing Day and New Year’s. They are committed, they study and involve others so that they can emerge victorious. Their spirit is one of unity to the core. They work deep into the night sometimes to the dawning of a new day. They are like bees in a hive, all involved in making honey.

Today, in spite of our short comings, our loving Father is never too busy to create spiritual and moral newness in our lives, so that we may be able to have others look on us, and do the same – so help us God!
