Major, Bowleg fall in respective tennis finals

Bahamian Michael Major Jr. came up short in the final of the Premier Tennis 500 Tour’s Universal Tennis Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, over the weekend, falling to American Joshua Sagaille, who, at 23, is eight years older than him at 15.

Major was respectable, falling 6-4 and 6-3 in the men’s singles final. He is regarded as one of the top young players from The Bahamas, and was the only Bahamian to take part in the event.

After getting a bye in the first round, Major went on to win his second round match in straight sets. He defeated American Gavin Browne Jr. in the round of 32, 7-5 and 6-2, after being down 3-2 in the first set and 30-0 in the sixth game of the first set.

In the third round of 16, Major won with identical scores of 7-5 and 7-5, over American Jaden Brady, and in the quarterfinals and semifinals, he took down American Brighten Jiang and Colombian Santiago Perez, respectively.

In the quarterfinals, Major won 6-4, 2-6 and 10-5, and in the semifinals, he prevailed 6-4, 3-6 and 10-8.

Major is a student at Windsor School here in New Providence and is a member of the Albany Tennis Academy.

The Premier Tennis 500 Tour encompasses a tournament circuit in different regions of the state of Florida, where local and foreign players compete. The event was open to players whose Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) is below 10.0. The UTR is a rating system that provides a single, unifying language and standard for tennis players across ages, geography, gender and economics.

Bahamian Maddisan Bowleg advanced to the final of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Level 7 event at the Hidden Creek Country Club, in Reston, Virginia. She competed in the Girls 18s Division, winning three matches to advance to the final.

Bowleg went on to play a very close match but fell in the final, losing in a tiebreak.

The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) congratulates Major on a great run to the men’s final in Fort Lauderdale, and Bowleg on reaching the final of her event in Reston, Virginia.
