Veteran cosmetologist Dr. Zelrona Mackey was among 10 Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) alumni who were recently recognized by the institution for having reached significant personal achievements and having made impactful contributions in their various trade areas.
Mackey was one of four people to receive the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award for her 17 years of service to BTVI’s beauty trades department, during BTVI’s second RBC Race for the Kids Runway to 5K Awards.
Also bestowed with the honor was certified accountant Dr. John S. Bain who studied electrical installation and accounts at BTVI; owner of tool company Sidney Sinclair; electric company proprietor Bernard Rolle; and deceased fashion designer Percy Wallace, who taught at the institution.
Among the Distinguished Alumni Emerging Leader Awardees were Ismella Davis-Delancy, who studied hotel training at the then-Industrial Training College; Christina Gilbert, a two-time graduate of BTVI, who is a licensed Customs broker and purchasing manager for a fast food restaurant; and Kenneth Russell, former member of parliament, and the owner of a construction and building services company, and an architectural firm in Grand Bahama.
Distinguished Scholar Practitioner Awards were presented to Kenton Roker and Dr. Dellarese Taylor.
Roker, who owns an auto business, is chair of construction and mechanical trades at BTVI’s Grand Bahama campus, where he has served the institution for the past 18 years.
Taylor, a cosmetologist with over 35 years of experience, is currently an adjunct cosmetology instructor at BTVI and owner of a beauty institute. She holds the position of president of the Bahamian Cosmetologists and Barbers Association.
The alumni awards ceremony was the precursor to the virtual RBC Race for the Kids. Proceeds benefit BTVI students.
BTVI hoped the awards piqued the interest of prospective students, while motivating those currently enrolled.
The event was hosted by Alicia Thompson, BTVI’s associate vice president of fund development, and Kadren Carey, a 2021 alum. The duo, who was in studio with the awardees, helped to make the hybrid event come alive with their engaging personalities. They entertained attendees who logged in from throughout The Bahamas, Canada and South Florida.
