The two-man team didn’t get the medal finishes they were looking for, but still turned in some spirited efforts at the International Cycling Union’s (UCI) Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (DR), this past weekend.
Competing internationally for the first time in nearly two years because of the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, the team mustered up enough energy to secure a pair of 11th place finishes. About 100 cyclists from 10 nations took part in the two-day championships.
In the 15-16 age group (pre-juveniles), Barron Musgrove Jr. finished 11th in the 10-kilometer (6.21 miles) Individual Timed Trials on Saturday and failed to finish the 43-mile road race on Sunday. In the Individual Timed Trials, he finished in 17 minutes and 25 seconds – three minutes and 17 seconds behind the winner.
The host nation secured the top two spots while Puerto Rican riders were third and fourth.
Juan Sebastián Venegas Fernandez, of the Dominican Republic, won the gold in 14 minutes and eight seconds. His countryman Rodrigo Gabriel
Alonso Valerio was second, finishing in 14 minutes and 13 seconds. Lloyd Rivera, of Puerto Rico, won the bronze medal, finishing in 14 minutes and 34 seconds. Kemuel Soto, also of Puerto Rico, was fourth in 14 minutes and 37 seconds.
In the 17-18 age group (juveniles), Felix Neely finished 11th in his age group’s Individual Timed Trials. Neely completed the 20-kilometer (12.43 miles) course in 30 minutes and 21 seconds.
This time, Bermuda swept the top two positions. Alexander Miller won the race in 26 minutes and 15 seconds, and his teammate Liam Flannery finished second in 26 minutes and 21 seconds. Derex Segarra, of Puerto Rico, took the bronze medal, finishing in 27 minutes and 46 seconds. The host nation settled for fourth and fifth this time around.
This was the first time The Bahamas was represented in an international event in cycling since the COVID-19 pandemic surfaced in this part of the world in March 2020, and certainly the first time in this Olympic cycle. This was Musgrove’s first time competing
internationally while Neely competed in the same championships in 2019, finishing fifth in the road race in Bartica, Guyana.
This year, the event took place at Avenue Mirador Sur in Santo Domingo. The host nation dominated the medal standings with four gold, an equal amount of silver and three bronze. Puerto Rico finished second with a gold, a silver and two bronze, and Bermuda and Aruba finished tied for third with a gold, a silver and a bronze each.
The two-man Bahamian team was coached by Barron “Turbo” Musgrove Sr., who also serves as the president of the New Providence Cycling Association (NPCA).
Musgrove Sr. said training during this period was a challenge because of COVID-19, but added that they persevered and are looking forward to what’s to come in the future for Bahamian cycling. He said they have quite a few youth cyclists under the age of 15 who they are looking to for big things in the future. He expect them to form the next generation of Bahamian cyclists and represent the country well on the international stage.
