College swimmers prepare for conference championships

With a shortened swimming regular season wrapping up last weekend for most Bahamian collegiate swimmers, they will now turn their attention to their respective conference championships in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I swimming, set for later this month.

Lilly Higgs was in action for the University of North Carolina (UNC) Tar Heels as they easily won their dual over the rival Duke Blue Devils, 190-110, at home at the Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Higgs swam the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events and the 200-yard medley relay.

The junior and her teammates Grace Countie, Sophie Lindner and Heidi Lowe set the tone for the Tar Heels in the first event when they won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:37.90. Higgs swam the second leg and turned in a split of 27.55 seconds.

Finishing second was the Blue Devils ‘A’ team when they recorded a time of 1:39.13. The Tar Heels ‘B’ team placed third with a swim of 1:41.46.

The Bahamian placed second in the 200-yard breast as she had a tough time catching the Blue Devils’ Salley Foley. Higgs swam 2:12.62. Foley won in 2:09.68. Finishing close behind Higgs was her teammate Lexi Rudolph who posted a time of 2:12.86.

In the 100-yard breast, Higgs settled for third, touching the wall in 1:01.07. Foley won that race after clocking 1:00.45. Finishing second was Higgs’ teammate Allie Reiter after she swam 1:00.64.

Higgs’ next meet will be the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Women’s Swimming Championships set for February 17-20 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Florida State University (FSU) Seminoles’ junior Izaak Bastian swam last week Wednesday against another Bahamian, Jared Fitzgerald, and the University of Tampa Spartans. Bastian’s next meet will also be at ACC Championships but the men’s portion will be held February 24-27. It will be held at the same location as the women’s championship.

In action last week Friday in NCAA Division II competition were Lamar Taylor and Anya MacPhail whose schools faced each other in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Taylor’s team, the Henderson State University Reddies, won a home meet 164-115, taking down the Oklahoma Baptist University Bison. MacPhail and the women made up for the men’s loss when they defeated the Reddies’ women, 191-94.

In the sixth event of the day, Taylor and the Reddies’ 200-yard medley relay team were victorious as they won that event with a time of 1:34.25. His teammates were Jase Pinckney, Oscar Patten and Patrick Dabrowski. The Reddies’ ‘B’ team was second in 1:35.59. The Bison’s ‘A’ team was a close third with a time of 1:35.67. MacPhail placed third in the 200-yard individual medley (IM) after touching the wall in 2:22.50. She was part of a Bison’s top-three finish as her teammates Emma Jorgensen and Brooke Newby finished first and second respectively.
