The Bahamas falls to USA

A game-high 22 points from Travis Munnings was not enough for The Bahamas to take down the number one ranked United States of America (USA) in Group D action in the FIBA (International Basketball Federation) AmeriCup 2022 Qualifiers.

Team Bahamas fell 93-77 at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico yesterday.

The Bahamas gave a valiant effort. At the 6:22 mark in the second quarter, starting point guard, Dominic Bridgewater, made a jump shot that gave The Bahamas a 34-33 lead. However, the Americans went on 21-6 run to end that quarter. The score was 54-40 heading into the half.

In the second half, Team Bahamas kept knocking at the door, but the Americans controlled the game to remain a perfect 5-0.

Head coach for Team Bahamas, Mario Bowleg, spoke to the media after the game.

“I think we just had some miscommunication in defense where they were able to get in transition and their three-point shooters to knock down some three-point shots. That would separate them from us. Even though, looking at the statistics, the rebounds seem to be fair. I think we allowed them to beat us on the offensive boards that allowed them to have too much second chance shots,” Bowleg said

Bridgewater and David Nesbitt scored 14 points each, and Kentwan Smith chipped in with 13 points for The Bahamas.

Isaiah Thomas and James Nunnally paced the Americans with 19 points.

Team Bahamas will close out the group stage tonight in a must-win game against the host – Puerto Rico. That game gets underway at 9 p.m. local time, 8 p.m. in The Bahamas. In order to advance to the FIBA AmeriCup 2022 competition set for September 2022, The Bahamas has to beat Puerto Rico.
