As they have been doing all season, Bahamian collegiate track and field athletes continued to put on a show on the indoor athletics circuit this past weekend. Bahamian athletes are gearing up for their respective conference championships.
Putting on some impressive performances in her events over the weekend was Washington State University (WSU) Cougars’ junior Charisma Taylor. She posted a school-best and meet record in the 60 meters (m) hurdles and posted another meet record in the triple jump. She won both events at the Texas Tech Matador Qualifier that was held at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center in Lubbock, Texas, on Friday.
Taylor bested her own Cougars time in the 60m hurdles when she finished the race in a blistering 8.16 seconds to put her name in the meet record books in that event. She held the previous Cougars record of 8.19 seconds. It was an impressive personal best for her after going into the final with a time of 8.27 seconds from the preliminaries. The Bahamian is listed in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I top 20 at number 18 in this event. She was able to finish comfortably ahead of two Texas Tech Red Raiders athletes. Gabrielle McDonald was second with a time of 8.30 seconds, and Demisha Roswell was right behind her in 8.32 seconds.
In her main event, the triple jump, Taylor was able to capture the meet record with a leap of 13.45m (44’ 1-1/2”) to win that event. Her winning jump came on her fourth attempt. This puts her in the NCAA DI top 10 rankings at number eight.
The host school’s Kennedy Adams finished a distant second with a leap of 12.08m (39’ 7-3/4”). The University of New Mexico Lobos Marthe Roee finished third when she posted a jump of 11.54m (37’ 10-1/2”).
The Cougars will have their final tune-up for the Pac-12 Championships this week Thursday through Saturday when they head to the Dempsey Indoor Track in Seattle, Washington, for the University of Washington’s Husky Classic.
Over in Ann Arbor, Michigan, there was a first and second place finish for Ohio State Buckeyes’ sprinter Adrian Curry at the Silverston Invitational on Friday. He also helped his 4x400m relay team to a first place finish.
Curry won the 200m race with a personal best time of 21.63 seconds. He was followed by the University of Michigan’s Austin Lin who ran 22.07 seconds. Curry’s teammate Myles Marshall was third after posting a time of 22.13 seconds.
The Buckeyes had two teams that competed in the 4x400m relay. Curry anchored the winning team that posted a time of 3:22.67. His team included David Palmer, Nick Miller and Frank Hayes. The second Ohio State team finished close behind them with a time of 3:22.88.
In the 60m dash, Curry clocked another personal best of 6.81 seconds to finish in second place. He was one of three Buckeyes to secure a sweep on the podium. Eric Harrison won that event in 6.71 seconds. Finishing third was Kainnan Ramsey with a time of 6.86 seconds.
Over at the 2021 Air Force Collegiate Open in at Cadet Field House in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Northern Colorado freshman Wendira Moss finished 15th in the prelims of the women’s 60m in 8.06 seconds and failed to qualify for the final. Another Bahamian freshman at Northern Colorado, Craiesha Johnson, was 17th in the prelims in that race in 8.17 seconds. Moss was 10th overall in the 200m in 25.67 seconds. Johnson was 18th overall in 26.61 seconds.
In NCAA Division II action, Denisha Cartwright and Lyric Brennen helped the University of Minnesota at Mankato Mavericks close out their indoor regular season with a win. They did it at their home meet, the President Davenport Classic, held at Myers Fieldhouse in Mankato, Minnesota, on Saturday.
Cartwright won the 60m dash and Brennen won the 60m hurdles.
Cartwright, the reigning Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Track Athlete of the Week, clocked a season’s best of 7.54 seconds to win the 60m dash. Her time was good enough for a NCAA Division II provisional time and also put her tied at number four in the NCAA Division II rankings. Finishing second was her teammate Grace Hartman with a time of 6.66 seconds. Finishing third was another Mavericks athlete, Ja’Cey Simmons, when she clocked 7.68 seconds.
Brennen clocked a personal best time of 9.34 seconds to win the 60m hurdles. She was able to edge out the University of Minnesota at Duluth’s Hannah Lamkin who posted a time of 9.36 seconds. Brennen’s teammate Emma Weatherly was third with a time of 9.44 seconds.
Next up for the Mavericks is the NSIC Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday. The meet will take place on their home track.
This coming weekend, a number of Bahamians will be in action for their respective schools.
