Bahamian collegiate athletes at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I (DI) and Division II (DII) levels continue to put on impressive performances as the indoor track and field season winds down.
Sasha Wells continued her impressive NCAA DI indoor run for the Oral Roberts University Golden Eagles when she won three individual events at the Washburn Challenge hosted by Washburn University at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility in Topeka, Kansas, on Friday. Fellow Bahamian and Golden Eagles athlete Bradley Dormeus won two individual events and was a part of the winning relay that day. Both Bahamians were able to break facility records.
Wells, who celebrated her 22nd birthday earlier this week, set the women’s 60 meters (m) hurdles facility record when she clocked 8.40 seconds to win that event. Second place was secured by Arkansas State University Red Wolves’ Camryn Newton-Smith with a time of 8.46 seconds. Third place went to fellow Bahamian and Golden Eagles athlete Gabrielle Gibson with a time of 8.53 seconds.
In the 60m dash, Wells clocked 7.51 seconds to win that event. Second to her was Gibson who sprinted to the finish line in 7.76 seconds. It was South Dakota University Coyotes Erin Kinney who finished third when she posted a time of 7.79 seconds.
Wells was not finished as she also placed first in the 200m when she recorded a time of 24.56 seconds. Wichita State University Shockers Paula Garcia ran 24.57 seconds to secure second place. The Red Wolves was third with Osereme Erewele clocking 24.84 seconds.
Dormeus got the facility record in the men’s 400m after blazing around the track in 48.27 seconds. His teammate, Cameron Neely, was second with a time of 48.62 seconds. The Golden Eagles duo was too much for the field as the
University of Tulsa Hurricanes’ Henry Visser placed a distant third in 49.63 seconds.
In the 200m, Dormeus was able to hold off the field as he crossed the finish line in 21.65 seconds. The Shockers’ Joakim Genereux placed second when he posted a time of 21.84 seconds. Third place was secured by Dormeus’ teammate, Aaron Charlton, after he recorded 21.90 seconds.
The junior anchored his 4x400m relay team that included Charlton, Daniels Bambals and Ethan Hanna to victory when they clocked 3:17.37. The Shockers was second when they clocked 3:23.47. Third place went to the Hurricanes who posted a time of 2:23.60.
The Golden Eagles take this weekend off as they prepare for the Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships set for February 26-27 at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Complex in Brookings, South Dakota.
Shaun Miller Jr. secured his first victory of the season in the men’s high jump for the Ohio State Buckeyes. The sophomore cleared 2.13m (6’ 11-3/4”) at the SPIRE Institute’s Big Ten Invite. That height put Miller at number 22 on the NCAA DI list in that event. He beat out a pair of Rutgers University Scarlet Knights athletes in Qayyim Ali and Semaj Willis who placed second and third, respectively. Ali cleared 2.08m (6’ 9-3/4”) while Willis cleared 2.03m (6’ 8”) for third.
Devine Parker placed second for the Buckeyes in the 200m at this same meet with a time of 23.89 seconds. The sophomore’s teammate, Anavia Battle, won the race with the third-fastest time in the NCAA Division I when she clocked 22.88 seconds. Indiana University Hoosiers Alyssa Robinson was third when she crossed the finish line in 24.18 seconds.
Next up for the Buckeyes is the University of Michigan’s (UM) Silverston Invitational set for tomorrow. It will be held at the UM Indoor Track Building, in Ann Harbor, Michigan.
Finishing with the 10th-best overall time in the NCAA DI for the women’s 4x400m relay was Doneisha Anderson and the University of Florida Gators at the Tyson Invitational at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Friday.
Anderson and her teammates which included Taylor Manson, Talitha Diggs and Sterling Lester ran a season’s best of 3:34.02. Anderson anchored the team and they placed third overall. Texas A&M won that event with a time of 3:26.27. The University of Texas was second when they clocked 3:34.02.
Anderson and the Gators take this weekend off as they prepare for the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championships slated for February 25-26 right at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
For a second consecutive week, Bahamian Denisha Cartwright was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Track Athlete of the Week in NCAA DII action. The Minnesota State at Mankato Mavericks sophomore had a perfect weekend, winning the 60m hurdles and helping her 4x400m relay team to a first-place finish at the
Minnesota State Triangular on their home track at Myers Fieldhouse in Mankato, Minnesota.
She helped the Mavericks to stay perfect on the season with four straight wins.
In the 60m hurdles, Cartwright ensured that she stayed at the top with the fastest time in the country for the NCAA Division II when she clocked 8.50 seconds. It was an improvement by .12 seconds of the time she posted the week before. Her college best is 8.49 seconds.
Her teammate, MacKenzie Keune, was second with a time of 8.70 seconds. The Concordia University at St. Paul Golden Bears’ Christabelle Mulcahy was a distant third with a time of 9.23 seconds.
Cartwright and her teammates Nyeaee Robins, Keune, and Mackenzie Woodard finished first with a time of 3:51.07 in the 4x400m relay. With that time, they now have the third-fastest time in NCAA DII this season and have an NCAA DII provisional time.
The Mavericks finished second when they posted a time of 4:10.83. The University of Sioux Falls Cougars clocked 4:15.99 to finish third.
Cartwright will look to do more home cooking when her school hosts the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs and the Winona State University Warriors in the President Davenport Classic this Saturday.
Also competing at the NCAA DII level were the Minnesota State University at Moorhead Dragons’ Robyn Rolle-Curry and Shyrone Kemp. Curry won the 200 and 400 meters races at the University of Mary Marauders meet. Kemp won the triple jump at the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits Indoor Classic.
Rolle-Curry won the 400 in a time of 59.28 seconds to be the only runner to clock sub-50 seconds. Second and third positions were secured by the Northern State University Wolves’ Isabel Kinzer and Emma Rezac, respectively. Kinzer clocked 1:00.33 and Rezac posted 1:00.47.
In the 200m, the freshman clocked 26.13 seconds. The Marauders’ Taylor Weidner was second as she posted 26.63 seconds. The Dragons’ Princes York placed third as she crossed the finish line in 27.03 seconds.
Kemp, who is ranked fifth in the nation at the NCAA DII level, was able to leap to 14.99m (49’ 2-1/4”) to secure the win in the men’s triple jump. Tyle Woelber recorded 14.15m (46’ 5-1/4”) to secure a second-place finish for his team, the Augustana University Vikings. Third place was secured by the Jackrabbits’ Tre Manning as he posted a jump of 13.64m (44’ 9”).
Showing up at the high jump at the same meet was Kemp’s coach, Bahamian high jumper Trevor Barry. The two-time Olympian jumped unattached and cleared 2.15m (7’ 0-1/2”) to finish tied for first place with Zack Anderson who also jumped unattached. Blake Vande Hoef was third when he cleared 2.10m (6’ 10-3/4”).
The Dragons return to action this Saturday at the University of North Dakota Tune-Up at its Athletics High Performance Center in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
