Women’s football in The Bahamas got a jolt in the arm this past weekend as Canada’s Carmelina Moscato has been named as the director of women’s football in the country by the Bahamas Football Association (BFA). Before taking on this position, she served as the League1 Ontario Women’s Division Commissioner. Moscato stepped down from that position in December.
On Friday, Moscato tweeted that she is looking to grow the game for girls and women in general.
“I am sending this tweet from The Bahamas where I will be embarking on a new journey as their director of women’s football for the Bahamas Football
Association,” Moscato tweeted. “This announcement is less about me, but more about sharing that I truly believe it’s better to not get attached to people, places or things, but rather causes and purpose. I have a burning desire to grow the game in general, but specifically for girls and women. I hope to leave an impact here… I will miss you Canada.”
Moscato has appeared in 94 matches for the Canadian women’s national football team. Her first appearance was in 2002, and she was a part of Canada’s bronze medal winning team at the 2012 London Olympics. The center-back helped her team to get a clean sheet with a 1-0 victory over France in that bronze medal match.
Moscato, a former Penn State University Nittany Lions player, holds a Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) ‘A’ License – the second-highest professional coaching license behind the UEFA Pro License. She has played competitively at the club level in Canada, Italy, Sweden and Australia.
The 36-year-old coached Canada’s Under-15 (U15) girls team to a silver place finish at the 2016 CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football) U15 Girls Championships in Orlando, Florida. They lost 2-0 to the host nation. Moscato was also an assistant coach for the University of Louisville Cardinals and the University of Wisconsin Badgers.
Moscato joins another Canadian, Marc Bircham, in the national football family of The Bahamas. Bircham serves as the technical director of the BFA.
