The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) congratulates Sierra Donaldson for outstanding play in being named athlete of the week in the Gulf South Conference (GSC) in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II, and continues to wish her well.
On February 12, Donaldson and the Lee University women’s tennis team upset No. 23 Tusculum University, 4-3.
Playing as the No. 5 singles, Donaldson, a junior, was a 6-3 and 6-3 winner over Paulina Loretz to set up the No. 6 singles event as a winner-take-all match for the teams.
In doubles, Donaldson and Carley Sickinger won 7-6 (8-6) over the team of Julia Lopez and Loretz.
Lee University Flames Tennis Head Coach Patric Hynes stated: “That’s the biggest win this program has had.”
Previously, in their season opener on February 4, the Flames women’s tennis team defeated the Tennessee Wesleyan University Bulldogs, 4-3, on their home courts at the DeVos Tennis Center, in Cleveland, Tennessee.
During that matchup, Donaldson teamed up with Sickinger and they got a 7-6 win over Maria Way and Honoka Tsuji at No. 3 doubles.
“I’m pleased for Sierra. She has been working hard on her game and she stepped up and delivered for us when we needed her the most,” said Hynes.
For the Bahamian collegiate tennis player, this is the first time in her career that she has earned this prestigious athlete of the week honor. Donaldson was named GSC Freshman of the Week during the 2019 season.
The Lady Flames (2-0) will enter GSC play and look for another big upset on Saturday as they host No. 7 West Florida at the DeVos Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
