It was a record-breaking performance for Bahamian collegiate swimmer DaVante Carey and the McKendree University Bearcats’ 400-yard medley relay team yesterday afternoon, as they touched the wall first at the eighth edition of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Swimming and Diving Championships.
The meet got underway on Wednesday at the Elkhart Aquatics Center in Indianapolis, Indiana, and wraps up tomorrow.
Carey and his team broke the GLVC record, clocking 3:10.74. With that time, they secured a NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division II (DII) provisional time. They also held the previous GLVC record that they set last year with a time of 3:12.06.
Carey’s other teammates were Henrik Dahrendorff, Gregg Lichinsky and Xander Skinner. The record they set was the fifth GLVC record for their team in the first two days of competition.
Sophomore Carey gave his team a great start in the backstroke portion of the relay. His first 50-yard split was 22.67 seconds and for his entire leg he swam the second fastest time of 47.57 seconds.
The race was a foregone conclusion after Lichinsky came out the water on the third leg as the Bearcats held a sizable two-plus second lead. Skinner brought them home to complete the record-breaking performance.
The Lindenwood University Lions were second as they posted a time of 3:12.26. Finishing third was the Drury University Panthers with a time of 3:12.98.
Earlier that day, Carey was set to compete in the 100-yard butterfly but he false started.
On Wednesday, the sophomore was in the 200-yard medley relay along with Dahrendorff, Lichinsky and Caleb Law. The quartet finished fourth overall with a time of 1:27.71, but they went under the NCAA DII provisional mark. Winning that race was the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds when they touched the wall in 1:26.68.
Carey also swam the 200-yard freestyle relay with the Bearcats’ ‘B’ team earlier on Wednesday. His split of 20.69 seconds was a personal best, and they were 14th overall with a time of 1:22.91.
The Bahamian has the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events remaining. The 100-yard back is set for today and the 200-yard back is set for tomorrow. In the relays, he will be swimming in the 400-yard free relay tomorrow.
There were no scores up to press time, but after 10 events on Wednesday, the Bearcats men’s team sat in fifth position with 288 points. The Greyhounds led with 440 points.
