MacFit sets its sights on sports tourism

MacFit’s new 17,000-square-foot facility was purposely positioned to usher in sports and fitness tourism, the company’s founder and President Jimmy Mackey said yesterday, adding that his brand is being tailored for export outside of The Bahamas.

The new MacFit West facility on Baha Mar Boulevard was officially opened yesterday by Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis.

Despite the depressed economy caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mackey said he is confident that the brand new facility will begin making money.

He said it is the only facility of its kind in the region. According to Mackey, there are also no concerns about servicing any debt for the mammoth gym, which he said cost “a good penny” to construct.

Mackey said the full-service gym will cater to the most elite athletes who may want to relocate to focus on their training.

“I’m trying to now implement fitness tourism… where you have the elite athletes, Hall of Fame athletes, who want to get away from their everyday life and family, so they can focus on their training,” Mackey said.

“This is what we wanted to provide for them, a place where they can get away and focus on training and training alone.”

The MacFit West facility is less than a mile from Baha Mar and close to other Cable Beach hotels.

Baha Mar President Graeme Davis was also on hand for the official opening of the facility.

In addition to the membership-based model that is typical of gyms, MacFit’s new facility features a number of retail offerings including sports recovery, massage therapy, physical therapy, cryotherapy and aquatics.

Mackey said his ultimate goal its to take the MacFit brand outside of The Bahamas.

“Some plans are coming on stream, but MacFit is looking to go global,” said Mackey. “We have to satisfy our local needs first… trying to venture out to the outer islands some day, so all of that is in my scope.”

Meantime, he said the West facility also has room for expansion and those plans are on the drawing board.

“We can do a whole lot more,” he said.
