‘Jazz’, Marlins win weekend series against the Phils

Bahamian professional baseball player Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm Jr. is wrapping up what has been a successful first full year in the majors for him.

Still in contention for the National League (NL) Rookie of the Year Award, the electrifying infielder of the Marlins surpassed the 100-hit plateau for his career over the weekend, finishing 2-for-11 in the three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies who are battling the Atlanta Braves for the top spot in the NL East Division.

The Marlins won two out of three against the Phils, but are significantly out of playoff contention with a 57-80 win/loss record. The Phils are just two games behind the Braves at 70-66. The Braves are 72-64. The Marlins are off today before hosting the third place New York Mets (69-68) from Tuesday to Thursday. They travel to Atlanta for three games against the Braves on the weekend.

As for Chisholm, he had his 100th career hit on Thursday – a double in a 4-3 loss for the Marlins to the Mets. The following day, he had the 32nd multi-hit game, and the fifth multi

extra-base hit game, of his career, as he finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the 10-3 win against the Phils.

On Friday, Chisholm hit a ground-rule double in his first at-bat on a line drive to right field. He took the first pitch to the Marlins in the game, a 92.4 miles per hour (mph) fastball from losing pitcher Kyle Gibson, and rocketed it to right field. Chisholm later scored on a three-run home-run by Jesús Sánchez as the Marlins got an early start.

In his second at-bat of the evening, in the bottom of the third, Chisholm grounded out to Phillies’ first baseman J.T. Realmuto. In his third at-bat, the 23-year-old Bahamian legged out a triple, showing off his speed on a sharp line drive to Phillies’ right fielder Bryce Harper.

The throw got away from Phillies’ third baseman Freddy Galvis and Chisholm slid safely into third.

Chisholm went hitless in his final eight at-bats in the series, but is now batting .254 on the season with 14 home-runs, 44RBIs (runs batted in) and 56 runs scored. He has 18 stolen bases on the season, a .314 on-base percentage (OBP), a .434 slugging percentage (SLG) and a .749 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS).

Chisholm has 93 hits on the season, and nine from a year ago, giving him 102 for his career. He is just seven hits shy of a 100-hit season, his first full season in the majors. Chisholm is also six home runs and two steals short of a 20-20 season for the Marlins, and with 25 games remaining, there is a realistic chance he could reach those milestones.

A total of 34 of Chisholm’s 93 hits this season have gone for extra bases. In addition to the 14 home-runs, he has 16 doubles and four triples.
