After a successful 2020-2021 collegiate campaign, Bahamian collegiate tennis player Abigail Simms was in action on the court playing at the IWU Fall Classic at the Sutter Tennis Center and Klopfenstein Tennis Courts in Marion, Indiana on Friday and Saturday.
Simms and her Indiana Tech Warriors were in action once on Friday and twice and Saturday. They were able to win all their preseason matchups unscathed. They played against Holy Cross College, Olivet Nazarene University and Huntington University.
Simms and the Warriors shut out Huntington 4-0 in their final matchup of the weekend. Simms and her doubles partner Ana Gomez played in the number one doubles. The duo made light work of Esther Bolon and Courtney Rich by coming away with the 6-1 victory. The Warhawks won the doubles point.
In the singles, Simms was up against Morgan Fitzpatrick. That match was not completed after the Warriors already defeated Huntington.
Earlier that day, they swept Olivet 5-0. Simms and Gomez did not need to complete their match against Heidi Moyo and Narjis Mzibri. The Warriors had already wrapped up the doubles point during Simms and Gomez’s match. In the singles, Simms had an easy first set win over Perez Guillen 6-1. She had a tougher time in the second sets as Guillen put up a fight. Simms ended up winning 7-5.
The Warriors started their dominance off on Friday with a 4-0 win against Holy Cross. Simms was in doubles action with Rebecca van der Lee in number one doubles. The duo had a tough match against Helga Lopez and Anna Beer. In the end, Simms and van der Lee fell 7-5. The Warriors were able to win the other two doubles matches to secure the doubles point.
Simms was in a tough battle in the singles against Clara Ruediger. In the end, Simms was able hold off Ruediger in two sets 7-6 and 7-5.
Next up for Simms and the Warriors are the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships. The tournament is set for September 29-October 2 at the Sutter Tennis Center.
The Warriors are coming off a win/loss record of 17-2 that included a 5-0 record in conference play. They were 15-1 at home, at the Swinney Tennis Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and ended the season as winners of six straight duels. They compete at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) level.
Simms and doubles partner Isidora Hrnjak earned All-Conference doubles honors, as they finished the season 6-3. The Grand Bahamian was also recognized for her play, making the All-Conference First Team.
