The ‘Jazz’ show

It was a career night for Bahamian professional baseball player Jasrado ‘Jazz’ Chisholm when he sent the ball out of the park twice and scored the winning run for his Miami Marlins (64-86) as they came back in dramatic fashion to top the Washington Nationals (61-89) on Monday night.

Playing in front of Marlins fans at LoanDepot Arena in Miami, Florida, Chisholm stole third base before using his speed again to score the winning run on a wild pitch. He was able to hit a home run each in the bottom of the third and fifth inning for his first multi-home run game in his young Major League Baseball (MLB) career.

After going down 7-4 at the top of the seventh inning, the Marlins roared back to tie the game at seven runs in the bottom of that inning to a three-run inning. After no team broke the ties, the game needed at least 10 innings to decide the game.

Chisholm and the Marlins were able to shut out the Nationals at the top of the 10th inning to keep the score tied at seven runs.

After missing out on an opportunity to even get on base in the ninth inning, the Marlins decided to put Chisholm, who led the club with 21 stolen bases on second base to start the extra inning. He took his stolen base total up by one when he stole third base to set up the go ahead run for his 22nd stolen base of the season. After the Nationals pitcher Sam Clay pitched two balls to start the inning, the third one, an 83.3 miles per hours slider, went far left in the batting zone and out of the catcher’s reach for a wild pitch.

“The Kid,” as Chisholm is also called, did what he did best when he is on base – use his baseball IQ and speed to get to home plate to score his third run of the night and give his team the victory.

“It’s exciting, I love being on-base with those opportunities where I can run and go hard,” Chisholm said. “As soon as they told me I was on second base, I was so excited to go out there.”

It was one of the best offensive games of the 23-year-old’s career 2-for-4 at-bat, scored three runs, two home runs and a whopping three runs batted in (RBIs) to go with one stolen base. At the end of the night his batting average went up from .251 to .254.

The Bahamian saw a cutter and a curveball come his way in the bottom of the third inning with is team on two outs. The umpire called ball on both of those pitches from Erick Fedde to put the count at two balls and no strike. On the third pitch, a cutter, the left-hand batter sent the ball to the right field and into the second deck for his 16th home run of the season.

It was the first run the Marlins put on the scoreboard for the night as the Nationals led 3-1.

He returned to the batter’s box two innings later against Fedde again. This time, Fedde had Chisholm on three balls and two strikes. Like he did in the third inning, Chisholm connected on the ball and sent out to right center field for his 17th home run of the season and his first multi-home run game in his first full year in the league.

After it looked like he may have missed out on the 20-20 club where a player hits 20 home runs and steals 20 bases, he is back on track to do just that with 12 games remaining on the season. He was in action against the Nationals again last night. No scores were available at press time.

After Monday night’s game, he is batting at an average of .254 batting average on the season and homered 17 times. He has 49 RBIs (runs batted in) and 67 runs scored. He is leading the team in triples with four. He has a .308 on-base percentage (OBP), a .438 slugging percentage (SLG) and a .746 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS).

His 22 stolen bases have him tied at number 10 in the league with the Toronto Blue Jays’ Bo Bichette. Chisholm’s 17 home runs is the club’s second highest among active Marlins players. He is still a candidate for the National League Rookie of the Year Award.
