Carey, Taylor headline Pan Am Junior 2021 swim team

DaVante Carey and Lamar Taylor will headline The Bahamas Aquatics Federation’s six-member team that will compete at the Junior Pan Am Games Cali-Valle 2021 set for November 25 to  December 5 in Cali, Colombia.

The team is comprised of four men and two women. The four men include Carey, Taylor, Nigel Forbes and Shawn Neely. On the female side, Rhanishka Gibbs and Rachel Lundy will compete.

Head coach Travano McPhee is no stranger to coaching Bahamian swim teams on the international level.

The team is strong and will be led by national record holders, Carey and Taylor, who have yet to turn 20. Carey holds three of the national records while Talyor holds one. Forbes is a strong junior swimmer who just left the 13-14 boys age category after dominating it with three records. Gibbs is an up-and-coming bright spot for The Bahamas and Lundy is a strong swimmer who is no stranger to international competition.

Carey, who swims for Mako Aquatics Club, holds the national record in the 50 meters (m), 100m and 200m backstroke distances. In the 50m, he has a time of 26.10

seconds while in the 100m distance he has a time of 57.03 seconds, and has swam 2:08.05 in the 200m. All three of those times were done this year.

The 19-year-old will be swimming in four individual events. He will be swimming in the 100m butterfly, 100m back, 200m back and the 100m free races. The McKendree University junior’s fifth race will be in the 400m free relay.

Taylor, who also swims for Mako, used his final race of the season to break an almost two-year record in the 100m free when he clocked 50.52 seconds.

Like Carey, Taylor is also swimming in five events. The Henderson State University sophomore will be in the pool in the 50m, 100m and 200m free races. He will be swimming in the 100m back and the 400m free relay with Carey.

Forbes will be swimming in the 100m and 200m fly along with the 200m individual medley (IM).

Neely, who swims for Lightning Aquatics Club, will only swim in the relay portion of the meet.

Lundy and Gibbs will swim in three individual races each. Lundy, who swims with Mako, is set to swim in the 50m and 100m free along with 200m IM. The 17-year-old will also hit the pool in the mixed 400m free relay.

For Gibbs, who swims for the Barracuda swim club, she will swim in three different strokes. The 15-year-old will compete in the 100m breast, 50m free and the 200m IM. Like Lundy, she is also on the mixed 400m relay team.

This is the first time that the Junior Pan American Games will be held. The objective is to promote the new generations of athletes, as well as to make new talents visible and support the development of sports in the junior categories through their participation in high level events.
