‘Jazz’ wraps up series with two hits

Bahamian Major League Baseball player Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm found his swing again in his last two games after coming up empty in his previous three games at-bat. He got two hits in each of the last two games against the Tampa Bay Rays but his Miami Marlins dropped all three games in that series over the weekend.

The left-hand batter finished yesterday’s 3-2 loss at the Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay, Florida going 2-for-4 at-bat and was left on base after both hits. His first hit in this game came off of an 80.8 miles per hour (mph) curve ball that he sent to centerfield. The count was 1-1 as he picked up the single at the top of the fourth inning.

His second hit came at the top of the sixth inning when he hit his 20th double of the season after hitting the ball down the center again. The 23-year-old took a risk on the 88.1 mph change up as he had three balls and one strike on the count. It was also his 110th hit of the season as he has a batting average of .251 this season.

In this game, the Rays opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning then went up 3-0 at the end of the fifth inning. The Marlins were able to score one run at the top of the seventh inning. Lewin Diaz hit a homerun at the top of the ninth inning to breath some hope to the Marlins as the Rays led 3-2. However, the next three batters were out as the Rays held on for the win.

The Marlins have lost five straight games and have been eliminated from playoff contention. They sport a 64-91 win/loss record on the season to sit in fourth place in the National League East division. They are a half game ahead of the Washington Nationals who is at the bottom of the division.

Chisholm got his bat going again on Saturday night as he finished that game 2-for-5 at-bat and scored one run in the Marlins 7-3 loss. The infielder scored at the top of the seventh on a Bryan De La Cruz single to cut the Rays’ lead to 4-3. The Bahamian got on base when he hit his 19th double of the season on a line drive to right field – that was his first hit of the night. His second hit came at the top of the ninth inning when he line drive a 97.7 mph fast ball to right field for a single.

He eventually made it to third base but was left there as the Rays won the game.

The Marlins have seven more games remaining on the season and will avoid finishing last in the division.

With those seven games, Chisholm will look to hit at least three more home runs to take his home run total to at least 20 home runs on the season. He is already halfway to a 20-20 season with 22 stolen bases. He has 49 runs batted in (RBI) and an on base slugging percentage of .734 thanks to an on-base percentage of .304 and a slugging percentage of .431.

Next up for Chisholm and the Marlins is a divisional matchup against the New York Mets (73-82) at Citi Field in Queens, New York. The first game gets under way at 4.10 p.m. tomorrow.
