Bahamian professional baseball player Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm scored one run as he and his Miami Marlins avoid a series sweep against the Pittsburgh Pirates when they won 6-5 in 10 innings at the LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida, yesterday afternoon.
Chisholm, the leadoff batter on the afternoon for the Marlins, picked up his 104th hit of the season in the bottom of the third inning. It was his only hit of the afternoon in four at-bats on the afternoon.
The shortstop’s only hit came on a 95.2 mile per hour fastball that he sent to the right field. He got the single, then made it to second base when pitcher Max Kranick pitched a wild pitch. Chisholm did not advance further on the diamond in that inning as the Pirates held on to a 1-0 lead.
The Bahamian now has 113 career hits. He came home in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Jesús Sánchez after he was walked to give the Marlins a 3-1 lead.
The Marlins held a 3-2 lead, heading into the top of the ninth inning, but a two-run home run by the Pirates’ Hoy Park at the top of the ninth inning. That shot to the right field by Park put the Pirates up 4-3. In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Marlins’ Bryan De La Cruz singled on a line drive to centerfield. The hit brought Magneuris Sierra home as he tied the game at four runs apiece.
At the top of the 10th inning, the Pirates scored one run as the pressure went back to the Marlins. Sánchez was placed on second base to start the Marlins’ 10th inning. As it turned out, it was a mistake that the Pirates will have to live with as Lewin Diaz came in and hit a two-run home run to give the Marlins the 6-5 victory.
It was a great win for the Marlins who sport a 63-86 win/loss record on the season and sit at the bottom of the National League standings. They are two games ahead of the Washington Nationals who have a 61-88 record on the season. The Pirates won the series 2-1 against the Marlins. The Pirates are 56-93 on the season.
The Marlins have 13 games remaining and will look to end the season on a strong note. They open a three-game road series against the Nationals at 6.40 tonight at the Nationals Park in Washington, DC.
Chisholm is averaging .251 batting average on the season and homered 15 times. He has 46 RBIs (runs batted in) and 64 runs scored. He is just five home runs short of a 20-20 season for the Marlins, showing power and speed with 21 stolen bases. He is leading the team in triples with four.
Chisholm spent much of the season as a lead-off hitter and has produced. He has a .307 on-base percentage (OBP), a .423 slugging percentage (SLG) and a .710 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS).
