The Bahamas got off to a strong start at the 2021 Confederation of Tennis of Central American and the Caribbean (COTECC) Under-12 (U12) team competition for sub-region three and four at the Centro Nacional de Tenis Parque del Este in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on Monday, taking down St. Lucia.
In the number one position, Tatyana Madu prevailed in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-1, over Amia Jn. Marie of St. Lucia, winning comfortably. It didn’t stop there as Briana Houlgrave won comfortably in the number two position, taking down Jaelayn Henry of St. Lucia, also in straight sets and almost by an identical score. Houlgrave won 6-1 and 6-0.
In doubles, The Bahamas’ team of Madu and Kaylah Fox won in straight sets, securing a 6-3 and 6-4 win over Jn. Marie and Brianna Jn. Baptiste, of St. Lucia.
The three-member team is coached by Marion Bain.
Competing in the week-long tournament which ends on Friday are host nation Dominican Republic, The Bahamas, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, Grenada, Guyana, Curacao, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Suriname, the US Virgin Islands and Trinidad & Tobago.
The tournament is played similar to the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup format. Each event will be played with two singles matches and a doubles match. The first two teams of each sub-region plus two teams from Mexico will qualify for the International Tennis Federation/COTECC U12 Team Final which will take place Thanksgiving Week – the week of November 22-26. The tournament in Santo Domingo is sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) congratulates Madu and Fox on the doubles win over St. Lucia, and the team on the opening 3-0 win.
They will play Trinidad & Tobago on Court 10 of the complex in Santo Domingo today.
