Bahamian minor league players see action on the diamond

Bahamian Minor League Baseball (MiLB) players were in action over the weekend, and most of them got their final series of the season underway last night.

Lucius Fox Jr. and the Omaha Storm Chasers split a six-game series on the road against the St. Paul Saints, finishing it off with a close 3-2 victory at CHS Field in St. Paul, Minnesota. In that game, Fox came in as a pinch hitter and was walked in his only at-bat.

In the entire series, he finished 5-for-18. His best hitting game was on Friday night when he went 2-for-5 and scored a run. The Storm Chasers won that game, 6-3. Fox hit the first pitch he saw in the top of the sixth inning for a single. He came home on a Bobby Witt double to put his team up 3-0.

The Storm Chasers now have a 64-50 win/loss record and sit in the eighth position in the Triple- A East League.

In the nine games he has played in for September, Fox is batting .222 – higher than his season average of .201. He has eight hits in the month and 23 for the Storm Chasers this season. Fox has one home-run on the season, eight doubles and 12 runs batted in (RBIs). He has 23 runs scored and 15 stolen bases.

The Storm Chasers welcomed the Iowa Cubs to Werner Park, just outside of Omaha, Nebraska, last night for the first game of a six-game series. The result of that game was unavailable up to press time.

After opening September without a hit in four games, third baseman Warren Saunders found his groove with a 2-for-3 game for the St. Lucie Mets on Friday. He also had two runs scored. Playing on their home field at Clover Park in Port St. Lucie, Florida, the Mets lost 10-8 to the Lakeland Flying Tigers. The Mets lost that five-game series four games to one with their only win coming on Sunday, 5-2. Saunders finished 1-for-4 in that game on Sunday and scored a run.

Saunders had a great sequence in the bottom of the fourth inning. He hit a single and later came home to give his team a 3-2 lead.

Compared to his season average of .256, the Grand Bahama native is having a rough month as he is batting .136 for the month of September. He has just three hits and one RBI in September. The Mets played the Jupiter Hammerheads on their home field last night, but the result was unavailable up to press time. The series against the Hammerheads is their final one for the season.

The Mets headed into last night’s game with a win/loss record of 56-54. They are fifth in the Low-A Southeast League, and can finish as high as third if they sweep the Hammerheads.

Inland Empire 66ers’ outfielder D’Shawn Knowles played two games in the last series for his team before going on the temporary inactive list on Thursday. He finished the two games 3-for-9. They lost both of those home games against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes at the San Manuel Stadium, in San Bernardino, California. They lost the series four games to two.

Knowles was still on the temporary inactive list as of yesterday afternoon. His 66ers were in action last night in their final series for the season. They took on the Lake Elsinore Storm in a road game at the Lake Elsinore Diamond in Lake Elsinore, California, and the result of that game was unavailable up to press time. That series wraps up on Sunday.

The Los Angeles Angels prospect is averaging .227 on the season with five home-runs. He also has 48 RBIs and 31 stolen bases. Knowles is tied for fourth in the league with those 31 steals.

The 66ers have a 55-56 record on the season and sit in fifth in the Low-A West League. They are out of the playoffs and will look ahead to next season.
