IC Bahamas Junior Series hosts first tournament of 2021

The new administration of the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) continues to foster new events as the IC (International Club) Bahamas Junior Series hosted its first tournament for 2021 at the BLTA’s National Tennis Centre over the weekend. The tournament featured players in the under-10 and under-12 categories, and was sponsored by the Winterbotham Trust.

In the under-10 boys category, Lucas Zoebelein prevailed while Cameron Ferguson was the runner-up. In the under-10 girls category, Marlee Martin held off Srae’ Rodgers for the title. Patrick Mactaggart defeated Chase Newbold in the under-12 boys championship match, and Sarai Clarke overcame Claudia Drgon in the championship game of the under-12 girls category.

The tournament was the first BLTA sanctioned junior tournament since the coronavirus pandemic reached The Bahamas. Juniors were reportedly excited to get on the tennis courts with the safety and health protocols in place.

IC Bahamas President Kit Spencer said: “We are very pleased to host the first tennis tournament for the year. This is the third year for the IC Tennis Junior Series in The Bahamas, and we feel this initial tournament should open the door for more tennis tournaments to be staged with the proper safety protocols and procedures in place.”

Spencer extended thanks to Tournament Supervisor Mickey Williams and Tournament Organizer Tara Mactaggart. In addition, Spencer thanked the staff at the BLTA’s National Tennis Centre, the BLTA itself and the officials at the tournament who recently received training at the BLTA’s Officiating Course.

The BLTA congratulated IC Bahamas for organizing this tournament and ensuring a safe, smooth and seamless process. A BLTA spokesperson said the successful tournament has paved the way for more competitive tennis tournaments in the future in a safe environment and with adherence to strict protocols.
