Bahamian cricketer Marc Taylor recently got a huge boost in his cricket career when regional sports company Trident Sports chose to sponsor him, having him utilize their equipment and wear their apparel.
Trident Sports is the leading cricket brand company in the West Indies and is located in Christ Church, Barbados. They provide cricket equipment throughout the region.
“Being sponsored by Trident Sports helps my cricketing career tremendously,” Taylor said. “Trident Sports sponsors a number of persons who play professionally in many forms of cricket. They are well-known internationally and will serve as an excellent marketing source in the future.”
The relationship started when Taylor’s coach, Marlon Graham, made a pitch to the owners. According to Taylor, the company decided that it was a good idea to become established in The Bahamas and for him to be recognized as one of their players.
Other Trident Sports ambassadors are Justin Greaves, Aaron Jones, Jeremy Solozano, Hayley Matthews and Keacy Carty.
In addition to sponsoring the Bahamian batting sensation, The Bahamas’ national cricket team will be sponsored with training apparel and game uniforms.
As for what this means for The Bahamas, a country not known for cricket, Taylor said it is a step in the right direction for the younger players.
“The Bahamas Cricket Association (BCA), along with local players, are excited about the sponsor’s decision. It shows that any player can succeed in cricket. It proves that hard work and dedication pays off. This is the motivation needed for younger players,” Taylor said.
Currently, the local cricket season is on hold, just like every other sporting league in The Bahamas. The towering batsman said he has used this time to research ways to market Bahamian cricket. One of the ways in which Taylor did that was by creating an Instagram page for the local association. That page will provide users with game stats and interviews after the matches.
The 30-year-old has been playing cricket from as far back as he can remember. As an opening batsman, he currently plays for the Police Enforcers in the BCA TwentyTwenty (T20) League. His highest score in a 40-over match is 223 runs, and in T20, his highest run total is 222. He also dabbles in the bowling aspect of cricket.
Taylor is hungry to be the first Bahamian to play in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20. His name was in this year’s draft pool back in July. Unfortunately for the Bahamian, he was not selected on a team. Although he was disappointed, he is hopeful that he will be drafted in the future, looking to next year.
“My focus for the rest of this year is all steered toward next year’s draft. I intend to enter it again with hopes of being in a better position. If I’m not mistaken, next year’s draft may be much earlier than the virtual draft which took place this year,” Taylor stated.
The Bahamian national cricket team player was aiming for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Americas spot on the respective franchises. It is an initiative that the CPL put in place in 2015. That allows one player from an ICC associate member in the Americas, which The Bahamas is a part of, to have a reserved spot on each of the rosters.
The CPL regular season began on August 18 and has wrapped up. They are now in the playoffs with the semifinal matches played yesterday. The Trinbago Knight Riders, who have not lost a match all season, secured one of the spots in the final. The Guyana Amazon Warriors and the St. Lucia Zouks semifinal match was set to get underway at 5 p.m. yesterday but no score was available up to press time. The final is set for tomorrow morning.
Taylor has been following the CPL games closely. He believes that the Knight Riders are a very strong team and seem to have an edge over the other teams. He believes that they will win the trophy this year.
Hopefully with this sponsorship and the slowing down of COVID-19, The Bahamas can see Taylor hitting sixes and fours for one of the teams in next year’s CPL competition as he looks to make “the 242” (The Bahamas) proud.
