Bahamian infielder with the Miami Marlins Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm played sparingly this past weekend as his team won three out of five against the World Series Champions Washington Nationals.
On Friday, they split a doubleheader, dropping the opener 5-0 and winning the late game, 14-3. On Saturday, they prevailed, 7-3, and then they split another doubleheader on Sunday, this time winning the first game, 2-1, and losing the second, 15-0, as they completed an unheralded 13-game home stand at Marlins Park, in Miami, Florida. The Marlins will play their final seven games this COVID-19-shortened 60-game season on the road.
On Friday, Chisholm saw action in the first game of the doubleheader. He started at second base and batted eighth in the lineup. The 22-year-old Bahamian finished 0-for-2 with a walk, a strikeout and left two stranded on base.
In his first at-bat in the bottom of the third, Chisholm walked and was caught stealing second base by Nationals catcher Yan Gomes. Nationals shortstop Trea Turner applied the tag.
Chisholm came up to bat again in the bottom of the fifth, and lined out to Nationals center fielder Victor Robles for the second out in that inning. He had his final at-bat in the bottom of the seventh and struck out swinging on a 92.2 miles per hour (mph) cutter to end the game. Chisholm struck out on three pitches as Nationals reliever Will Harris threw him three cutters, all in the 92mph range.
Defensively, he had a quiet day, recording just one putout and one assist on a double play.
He was a part of the final outs of the game for the Nationals when Marlins shortstop Miguel Rojas fielded a ground ball, threw to Chisholm at second base for one out and Chisholm fired to Marlins first baseman Jesús Aguilar to complete the double play and send the game into the bottom of the seventh with the Marlins still trailing, 5-0. Harris retired three of the four batters he faced in the bottom of the seventh, including Chisholm, to end the game in the Nationals’ favor.
Chisholm didn’t play in the second game on Friday nor the game on Saturday. He sat out the first game on Sunday, but started at shortstop in the second game and batted ninth. He finished 0-for-2 with a strikeout and is now hitless in his last 16 at-bats.
In his first at-bat in that second game of the doubleheader on Sunday, Chisholm was called out on strikes in the bottom of the third inning. In his second at-bat in the bottom of the fifth, he grounded into a forced out at second base but his speed allowed him to make it to first. He was stranded at first when the next batter, Marlins second baseman Jon Berti, was called out on strikes.
Chisholm had a busy day in the field on Sunday, as he turned on four assists and had one putout including a double play.
He turned a double play in the top of the first inning, receiving a throw from Berti, stepping on the bag and tossing the ball to first baseman Garrett Cooper to complete the double play. One inning later, he fielded a ground ball from Robles and threw to Cooper to record an assist.
In the top of the fourth, Chisholm got Turner on a groundout, and did the same to Robles again in the top of the fifth.
For the season, Chisholm is now batting .125 with one home run and three RBIs. He has six hits in 48 at-bats, five bases on balls, two stolen bases and has scored six runs. Chisholm has a .222 on-base percentage (OBP) and a .451 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS).
Defensively, Chisholm has 20 putouts, 39 assists, an error and has been a part of 12 double plays. He has a fielding percentage of 1.000 at second base and .952 at shortstop. Chisholm has started 10 games at second base this season and five at shortstop.
The Marlins are still in sole possession of second place in the National League East Division with a 28-25 win-loss record – three games behind the Atlanta Braves (31-22). They are fifth overall in the National League Standings of Major League Baseball (MLB).
The Marlins will now go on the road to end the COVID-19-shortened 60-game season. They will travel to Atlanta for a four-game set against the Braves starting today and then will head to New York for three games against the New York Yankees this weekend. The top eight teams in each league will qualify for the playoffs this year.
