Absolute discharge for woman selling coconut water without license

A young mother was granted an absolute discharge on Friday after she admitted to selling coconut water without a business license.

Police arrested Alexia Barr, 28, around 4 p.m. on September 19 for selling coconut water on Gladstone Road without a license.

She admitted the offense at her arraignment before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes.

According to the prosecutor, Sergeant Kendrick Bauld, the officers had previously warned Barr about selling goods without a license.

Barr’s lawyer, Christina Galanos, said she was trying to earn a living in tough economic times.

However, she said Barr had learned her lesson.

Forbes told Barr that she couldn’t choose which laws to follow. He told her unless she got a license police would continue to “stop and harass” her as they enforced a law that has been on the books since the 1960s.

He advised Barr to have her lawyer guide her through the business license application process.
