While Sandals has scrapped a 2020 reopening for its Sandals Royal Bahamian resort and has set its sights on a November opening for Sandals Emerald Bay, the Caribbean resort chain’s lesser-known Bahamas property – Fowl Cay Resort – is open for business.
A Caribbean Journal article heralded the small, Exuma island resort’s recent reopening.
Sandals Deputy Chairman Adam Stewart said in the article that privacy is more in demand than ever because of the COVID-19 pandemic and revealed that Fowl Cay is now more in demand than ever.
“With privacy now on many people’s minds, our entire villa collection has increased in popularity more so than ever before,” Stewart said in the article.
“Privacy is a luxury these days and this absolute gem continues to enchant visitors with its magnificent seclusion. Our Fowl Cay team is so happy to be back welcoming our treasured guests and doing what they love – sharing their slice of paradise with the world.
“Our Fowl Cay private island in Exuma is one of my absolute favorite places. It’s a place with some of the best fishing, snorkeling and exploring I have ever experienced.”
According to its website, Fowl Cay is a private island resort with only six villas on 50 acres.
Cruise lines have extolled the benefit of having private islands for their own restart, as a way of controlling the exposure of customers to who likely will have be screened for COVID-19.
The Bahamas has set mid-October as its date to reopen its tourism product in earnest, with COVID-19 safety protocols in place and accompanying restrictions for industry stakeholders.
However, Minister of Tourism and Aviation Dionisio D’Aguilar said last week that large hotel operators have indicated to the government that they prefer to wait until the United States’ November 3 elections are completed and possibly until the Thanksgiving holiday near the end of November, to consider opening their doors.
D’Aguilar added that some of those hotels have even considered waiting until the Christmas holidays to consider reopening.
