Despite uncertainty brought forth by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bahamas Baseball Association (BBA) will go ahead with its election of officers next week Monday virtually. This is in keeping with its constitution that states that the elections must be held once every four years in the month of September.
The last elections were held in 2016 when Samuel Rodgers Sr. won the president’s position. Nominations closed on Friday with him as the sole nominee, so he will go in unopposed and serve for the next four years. In fact, all of the nominees on Friday will enter office unopposed – Shane Albury (JBLN) and Joseph Moss (GBLL) as the first and second vice presidents, Clarence “CJ” McKenzie (FFBL) as the third vice president, Sandy Morley and Sonia Knowles (Legacy) as the treasurer and assistant treasurer respectively, Teddy Sweeting (FFBL) as the secretary general and Tracy Albury (Abaco) as the assistant secretary general.
There are a number of leagues under the umbrella of the BBA – the Junior Baseball League of Nassau (JBLN), the Freedom Farm Baseball League (FFBL), the Grand Bahama Little League (GBLL), the Legacy Baseball League and the Abaco Baseball League, just to name a few.
Nominations for the upcoming positions on the executive board were closed as of 5 p.m. on Friday.
Rodgers has been nominated for the position of president for a chance to serve and progress the baseball movement in The Bahamas for another four more years. All of the nominees represent a mixture from the different leagues in the country. It was said that all of the leagues were aware of the process.
“I have some plans to move baseball to higher heights, but I am not willing to release those plans until the election cycle is finished,” Rodgers said over the weekend.
The list of nominated persons will be sent to the leagues and the voting will be done via e-mail. The results will be sent to the overseers of the elections.
Baseball in The Bahamas is experiencing a boom with hundreds of youngsters engaged in the sport between the various leagues around the country, with quite a number of players playing in high school and colleges in the United States, and with 20-plus players signing professional contracts over the last five years.
After seven years of not having a player in Major League Baseball (MLB), The Bahamas finally got another one in when infielder Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm was called up to the Miami Marlins earlier this month. He has played in 19 games thus far, starting in 15 of them.
The last Bahamian player to play in MLB prior to Chisholm is Antoan Richardson for the New York Yankees.
There are some young up-and-coming players who will be looking to get their turn to play in the majors. These include players like Kristian Robinson of the Arizona Diamondbacks organization and Lucius Fox of the Tampa Bay Rays organization.
One of the items on the agenda for the incoming administration of the BBA is to facilitate the completion of the Andre Rodgers National Baseball Stadium. The completion date of the stadium has been altered on a number of occasions, for various reasons. The latest date given by Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Lanisha Rolle, in June, was December 2020, barring unforeseen circumstances. Initially, the project was set to be finished by the end of 2017.
The BBA is the governing body for the sport of baseball throughout the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
