After a stint at British Columbia Christian Preparatory (BC Prep) in British Columbia, Canada, Bahamian basketball players Joshua Dames and Bradley Lightbourne have teamed up again and committed to play basketball and continue their studies this fall at Midland College in Midland, Texas.
Before teaming up, Lightbourne played for Gateway Christian Academy in Porgy Bay, Bimini and Dames played for Tabernacle Baptist Academy in Freeport, Grand Bahama.
Both players gave Midland some thought and sought advice before signing their letters of intent to go to Midland this fall. Midland plays in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I.
“I had help from my high school coach, Gilbert Rolle Jr., and my mom, but most importantly, I prayed over this decision and I believe God just placed me in the right spot. [God] is my advisor and He led me to them,” Lightbourne said.
He is hoping for the program to get him better and to understand the game more.
Dames said: “It’s an honor and a blessing. I just want to give thanks to God who is the head of my life. None of this would be possible without Him. [The] excitement for college is huge. What led to my decision was me sitting down with my family and trying to figure out what is the best decision that I can make for me. Being able to take that next jump and we all came to the agreement that Midland was the best fit.”
The guard thanked his brother Tevin Dames who put his first basketball in his hands, his coaches at Teleos Christian Academy, Tabernacle and BC Prep along with his trainers.
The pair had a huge impact in their lone season for the BC Prep Panthers. Dames led the Panthers on the season with 18 points per game and three steals a contest. He shot 45.1 percent from the field and dished out two assists per game.
“My season at BC Prep was something that I did not expect,” Dames said. “I came there as a young kid from The Bahamas. I left there as a young man with more understanding, dedication, work ethic and hunger. It has been a great year for me in terms of teaching me how to control my emotions, speak well and to be able to work hard on everything.”
Lightbourne averaged 13 points per game, 3.7 rebounds per game and 2.1 assists per contest. He also shot a blistering 55 percent from the field.
“At BC Prep, there was a lot of up and downs but I thank God for my teammates and coaches for pushing me everyday. The program there has been a good program. As you can see, they developed my game a lot,” Lightbourne said.
Lightbourne joked that he has to hear Dames’ singing again, but has nothing but respect for him.
“He has been one of the best players I have played with my whole career,” Lightbourne said. “He pushes me. That man can shoot the ball and my goal is to become a better shooter than him. Having him alongside me is going to be fun with the both of us trying to reach our goal.”
Dames said Lightbourne is like a brother to him.
“The statistics speak for itself when him and I are on the court together. We definitely have that chemistry where we both know where each other are on the court. We pushed each other from the beginning of the year. To be able to come from The Bahamas together and be able to connect not just on the court, but off the court, we are brothers and we make sure each other is okay,” Dames said.
The Bahamian duo will look to represent The Bahamas proudly in Texas as they look to make some noise at Midland College together on the court this coming fall semester.
