Man fined $2,500 for breaking into liquor store

A man who broke into a liquor store in Greencastle, Eleuthera, was yesterday fined $2,500.

Dion Cummings spent a month on remand at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services before he changed his plea and admitted guilt.

Cummings did not have a lawyer when he made his initial court appearance before Magistrate Samuel McKinney.

Cummings broke into the storeroom of Big G’s liquor store on April 17.

In mitigation, defense lawyer Keith Seymour said that Cummings had been referred to Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre (SRC) two days before the incident.

Seymour said that prison was not the right place for Cummings and suggested that the court send him there. Seymour said that Cummings had seen a psychiatrist while on remand after he contacted Commissioner of Prisons Charles Murphy.

Prior to his arrest, Cummings worked as a helper at Princess Cays.

Seymour said, “Prison is not the place for him. Give him another chance at life and let mercy prevail.”

McKinney convicted Cummings, but released him from custody after he paid $1,500 on his fine.

He has until May 29 to pay the balance.
