An American boat captain accused of shooting at law enforcement officers on Green Turtle Cay, Abaco, was on Tuesday denied bail.
Prosecutors say that John Tellam, 60, of Coral Gables, Florida, endangered the lives of Corporal 2999 Glen Dean and Marine Seaman Keiton Bowleg on Friday, May 22.
Police said the shooting happened after a dispute over customs fees at the dock. In addition to allegedly opening fire on the officers with a black Remington 12-gauge shotgun, Tellam is accused of having hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
Prosecutors allege that Tellam had 138 rounds of 12-gauge shotgun shells, 100 rounds of .556 ammunition and 553 rounds of .223 ammunition with the intent to supply.
Tellam faces two counts of simple possession of ammunition regarding the alleged seizure of 20 rounds of .223 ammunition and 10 rounds of .410 ammunition.
Tellam pleaded not guilty to the charges at his arraignment before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes.
Forbes does not have the jurisdiction to grant bail for the offenses and remanded Tellam to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.
His trial is scheduled to begin on September 22.
