The prime minister’s announcement yesterday that the operating hours and days for the construction industry and hardware stores will be expanded, means CBS Bahamas will be able to bring staff on permanently and reduce some pressure on the National Insurance Board (NIB), the company’s co-owner and President John Treco told Guardian Business yesterday.
He added that the announcement means CBS can begin to work on a six- to seven-week backlog of orders. As a manufacturer of hurricane-proof windows and other hurricane-related products, he said things will now begin to “kick off”.
“We have two departments at CBS, one of which is contractual… That opening up in the last few weeks has helped us tremendously, actually,” said Treco.
“The opening up of the additional days for hardware stores is a big push to open up the economy, because it will allow us now to hire more people permanently and get them off the NIB drainage, because that’s not healthy for the economy at all.
“In respect to the light manufacturing, we do have Aluminum Fabricators Limited and we welcome what has been done because we have got projects that have been on hold now…and now we’ll be able to kick it off and get things moving.
“I think we’re heading in the right direction.”
Yesterday during his national address, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis revealed that the emergency orders will be amended to allow for construction companies on New Providence and Grand Bahama to operate on Saturdays, from seven in the morning to one in the afternoon.
And he said in order to help Bahamians prepare for the upcoming hurricane season, home and hardware stores will now be allowed to operate in-store hours on Mondays from eight in the morning until eight in the evening.
“This is in addition to the Wednesday and Friday in-store hours that home and hardware stores are currently allowed to operate,” Minnis said.
“The operating hours also apply to manufacturers of hurricane-proof windows and other hurricane-related products.”
Treco added that the online ordering and delivery service CBS has put in place since the emergency orders were put in place has been “going well”. He added that while there have been some inventory issues, as the economy improves he expects business to be on the “upswing”.
