ORU trio earns academic all-league accolades

A trio of Bahamians were among six Oral Roberts University (ORU) track and field athletes to be named to the 2020 Outdoor Track and Field Academic All-Summit League Teams last week.

The six were the most that the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles has ever had receiving that honor. The three Bahamians are Sasha Wells, Bradley Dormeus and Kayvon Stubbs.

To be eligible for the conference’s academic all-league team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.30 and must have completed at least one full academic year at the respective institution.

Wells, known for the hurdles, has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA and is a history major. She has been named to the academic team every eligible season as a Golden Eagles student-athlete.

This is one of many accolades Wells has received this year. She was also named as the Summit League Women’s Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year – her second straight year receiving that honor. She was also recognized as the 2020 Most Outstanding Championship Performer at the 2020 Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships – also the second straight year securing that honor for her.

Wells broke a league and facility record in the 60 meters (m) hurdles when she clocked 8.36 seconds in the preliminaries of the conference indoor championships. That mark was also a new school record.

She also won the 60m dash when she recorded a time of 7.61 in the final. She added a silver medal in the 200m after finishing in a time of 24.73 seconds in the final. In the 4x400m relay, Wells and her teammates finished second after powering their way to the finish line in 3:52.23. The junior also holds the school record for the 100m hurdles outdoors, clocking 13.39 seconds last year.

Wells is a 13-time All-Summit League honoree.

Last year December, she won the Collegiate Female Track Athlete of the Year Award and the overall Collegiate Female Athlete of the Year Award at the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) Masquerade Soirée and Awards Banquet.

Heading into her senior year, Wells will look to end her collegiate career on a strong note.

For Stubbs, this is her third time receiving the academic award. The cinema television digital media major posted a 3.91 GPA.

It was Stubbs who defeated Wells in the 200m at the conference indoor championships, posting a time of 24.40 seconds. This was her second time claiming that championship title.

Stubbs was also a part of the silver medal-winning 4x400m relay team. The junior added a bronze medal in the 60m dash after she clocked 7.72 seconds.

On the men’s side, Dormeus achieved a 3.2 GPA. He is an international business major with a minor in Spanish.

In the Summit League Indoor Championships, Dormeus went into the 400m final with a time of 48.41 seconds – the fastest preliminary time. He lowered that time to 47.99 seconds, winning a silver medal in a close finish with his teammate Devin Simon, who clocked 47.87 seconds. They were the only two athletes to run sub-48 in that race.

At that same meet, Dormeus and his 4x400m teammates were victorious when they clocked 3:14.88.

Dormeus was victorious in the 600 yards race at the J.D. Martin Invitational in February with a time of 1:12.86.

The accomplishments speak wonders to the hard work all three Bahamians put in both in the classroom and on the track this past season.

All three were unable to compete in the outdoor season after the COVID-19 pandemic forced a stoppage of sporting events worldwide in March.

The Golden Eagles compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I.
