Resolution to extend state of emergency to June 29

Dr. Hubert Minnis.

Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis yesterday tabled a resolution to extend the state of emergency to June 29.

The state of emergency was set to expire at the end of May.

While addressing the House of Assembly, Minnis said, “Tomorrow, we are going to debate this resolution. We will have the opportunity tomorrow, Mr. Speaker, to further extend the liberalization and create movement of certain sectors in The Bahamas.”

He said the government recognizes that individuals have been under lockdown and curfew orders for some time.

“We think we’re on the right track,” Minnis said.

Governor General C.A. Smith declared a state of emergency on March 18. It has already been extended twice.

Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Leader Philip Brave Davis has indicated the opposition will not support an extension of state of emergency beyond May.
