A service of remembrance for the victims of Hurricane Dorian will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, according to a Disaster Reconstruction Authority (DRA) press release issued yesterday.
DRA Managing Director Katherine Forbes-Smith said at the beginning of this month that 55 unidentified remains of storm victims that have remained in a trailer on Abaco since September, are expected to be buried.
The service and burial will be led by the Bahamas Christian Council and Abaco Christian Council. It will take place at the public cemetery, S.C. Bootle Highway, Central Pines. The service was initially scheduled for March 28 in Dundas Town, Abaco, but as a state of emergency was declared due to the COVID-19 pandemic and emergency measures restricted funeral operations, the service was postponed.
Forbes-Smith said in the DRA statement that some members of the community will be allowed to attend while following health guidelines.
“It is important to celebrate the lives of those who perished during Hurricane Dorian,” she said.
“We think it is now possible to have an appropriate service to honor those who died while allowing members of the Abaco community to participate in a manner that upholds public health guidelines.”
At least 74 people lost their lives during Dorian – the most powerful storm on record to hit The Bahamas.
Hundreds remain missing, and thousands were displaced in its aftermath.
Honoring those whose lives were lost “is a priority of the Disaster Reconstruction Authority, Abaco Christian Council, Bahamas Christian Council and Bahamas United Funeral Homes and Morticians Association”, the statement read.
