Sands allowed to resume work at PHA

Dr. Duane Sands.

The House of Assembly today passed a resolution to exempt Elizabeth MP Duane Sands from vacating his seat over his decision to seek a contract with the Public Hospitals Authority (PHA) to serve as a consultant surgeon.

Sands resigned from his post as Minister of Health earlier this month in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his letter to House Speaker Halson Moultrie, Sands said he resumed work as a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon as he continues to serve his constituency.

The resolution, seconded by Cat Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador MP Philip Brave Davis, was unanimously passed. Sands abstained from the vote.

Sands’ resignation was related to his involvement in a controversy in which six Bahamian residents were allowed to enter the country and home isolate at a time when Bahamian citizens were not being allowed to enter the country.

Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis took over the Health portfolio in the aftermath of Sands’ resignation.
