The University of The Bahamas (UB) announced yesterday that it is making adjustments to its admissions requirements for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 admissions due to the impact of COVID-19.
In a statement released yesterday, UB said that instead of awaiting Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) results, the university will require students to sit placement examinations in basic college-level English and Math.
Additionally, prospective art students must submit a portfolio of their work; prospective education students must be interviewed; prospective music students must be interviewed and also audition, and prospective nursing students must complete UB’s Pre-Nursing Programme.
According to the statement, students who anticipate graduating from high school in June 2020, who wish to be admitted to University of The Bahamas and who do not meet the current admissions criteria, shall be considered for admission on the basis of their cumulative grade point average for grades 10, 11 and the first term of grade 12. Admission will also be considered based on students’ placement in the Math 140, basic college mathematics, and Eng 119, basic college English, exams.
Students who do place below the math or English exams will be admitted into UB’s college preparatory program.
According to the release, students with a CGPA of 2.50 or higher will be accepted into a university degree program given they place at both Math 140, basic college Mathematics and Eng 119, writing and rhetoric I on UB’s placement examination; [or] place at either Math 140 or Eng 119 on UB’s placement examination.
Should those students fail to pass the examinations, they would instead be accepted into UB’s Academic Enhancement/College Preparatory Programme.
All schools in the country were closed last month as the country recorded its first case of COVID-19.
They remain closed indefinitely, and national exams including the BGCSE have been suspended.
Minister of Education Jeffrey Lloyd, however, has said that 12th grade students will still graduate.
