Junior tennis athletes from New Providence, Grand Bahama and Eleuthera are finding creative ways to stay fit while at home.
The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) has encouraged the athletes to share their experience of staying ready in these difficult times due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
From Harbour Island, Nathan Pelletier said: “During this COVID-19 situation, I try to exercise as much as possible and so should you. Exercising is very fun and also keeps you from being bored. In doing this, you should also be safe.”
From Spanish Wells, another island off mainland Eleuthera, Josh Higgs said: “An incline makes it a little different but forces me to hit off the front foot. I am staying prepared.”
From the nation’s second city, Freeport, Grand Bahama, Rachel Thompson had this message: “COVID-19 has impacted the world at large. However, I choose to make the best out of an awful situation. I admonish my peers to do the same. We shall overcome this pandemic as victors. As a junior tennis player I found the need to be motivated by doing daily drills and exercises. To my BLTA family, be encouraged, be motivated, be the best you can be. Stay at home and stay safe.”
London Mortimer, who is one of the youngest active juniors in the country, said: “Exercise, get strength and get muscles.” She said that is her method of staying fit at home.
From the capital island of New Providence, Dentry Mortimer Jr. encouraged all to stay fit. He said: “I think exercising is important, especially for athletes. Exercising can help you be mentally and physically healthy. For this period of time, we have to continue to exercise to ensure that when it is time to go back on the court we are stronger or as strong as we were, faster or as fast as we were and to make sure we improve our court skills. Exercising will help us a lot as we need to ensure we have a strong core for balance and also we must try to improve our endurance.”
The youngsters posted exciting and motivating videos on the Facebook “BLTA Tennis” page and on Instagram @bahamaslta.
For the most part, they are encouraging all tennis players and all athletes to stay home, stay safe and stay ready.
